Year 8 Science Scholars Visit Pre-Prep

On Wednesday morning Pre-Prep were delighted to host the Y8 scholars who assisted in the teaching of a science lesson. The lesson took the form of a challenge where the task was to design and build a plasticine boat that held as many marbles as possible. The two Pre-Prep classes were divided into pairs and each pair had aY8 student working with them. The initial aim was to come up with a suitable design, construct the boat out of plasticine and perform some investigations into how the boat faired and improve it based on the results. After half an hour all groups were brought together and the first official test took place. To background music of ‘Ferry cross the Mersey’ and the Titanic theme tune, Mr Watt placed marbles into each boat until it sunk. After the first test each group had five minutes to improve on any weaknesses ready for the final official test. After this both scores were added up to find out which group had been the most successful boat builders. The winning team’s boat managed to hold a total of 240 marbles. Congratulations to the ‘The Cheeky Monkeys’ otherwise known as Sophie T., Edward M., Toby G., Nancy S. and Lily S.
Thank you Mr Watt and Y8 for such a fantastic lesson!
