1st XI Cricket versus Malsis
Monday 22nd June 2009
S.Anselm’s 93 all out (23.4 overs) lost to Malsis 161-4 (30 overs) by 68 runs
The 1st XI came across the best team they have played against all term, the touring Malsis team from Yorkshire. From the very first over the Malsis batsmen asserted themselves against some indifferent S.Anselm’s bowling, however, there was a chunk of luck when one of the openers chopped a George M delivery onto his own stumps. This was to be S.Anselm’s only success for some time as the Malsis numbers 2 & 3 added 110 runs without many alarms. The S.Anselm’s fielding was not up to its usual high standards and a few mistakes were made. None of the bowlers escaped punishment and none of the bowlers could bowl a consistent line and length. William S, Ben D and James B picked up one wicket each and the Malsis innings closed on 161-4 from their allotted 30 overs.
The S.Anselm’s reply started slowly with George M and James B finding it hard to get the very accurate Malsis bowlers away. The Malsis fielders were excellent backing up their bowlers superbly. Both batsmen fell to very good catches leaving S.Anselm’s struggling on 27-2. Tom B and James C then batted well to get the team back into the game but James C then fell to another excellent catch. Tom B was playing another fantastic innings but wickets were falling at regular intervals and he was eventually the 7th wicket to fall for a brave 37. The innings then folded quickly with the team eventually being dismissed for 93.
A slightly disappointing finish to the season as the XI knows they could have performed better. This has been an enjoyable season and it has been a remarkable turnaround from a poor start. All of the players have improved by working hard at their games taking on board the advice given and have matured into a good team achieving some excellent wins. Well done.
