1st IX v Denstone College Lost 41 1/2 - 27 1/2

Half-time – 16 - 24 to Denstone.

POM – Lily Strange, Lucy Rusling and Annie GP for formidable batting in the first innings and keeping us in the game, well done girls!

1sts Squad:
Backstop – Emma H
Bowler – Nancy S
1st post – Lily S
Fielders: Georgy H, Annie GP, Olivia C, Hannah S, Arabella H, Lucy R

A couple of players were missing for this game, so we had a slightly revised squad and Georgy H made her debut for the 1sts. Denstone requested we played an all out innings, rather than counted balls for the 1st innings, so they could practice for their JET match on Wednesday. We agreed and 60 good balls were delivered by bowler Nancy S before the last Denstone batter fell! The pitch was very dry and flat, meaning if we did not get down to stop the ball, it bounced and went for miles. At times we were a little slow to react but on the whole the fielding was much better with Annie GP and Arabella H taking some good catches in the deep. We still need to work on our throwing accuracy, but that had also improved on the whole.  Lily S and Emma H were on great form, getting three players out on the trot at 1st post at one stage. The girls were subdued when they heard the Denstone first innings total, but I explained that the pitch conditions were conducive to such high scores and they had an opportunity to make it work for them too.

We did bat better than Wednesday but tended to hit the ball up rather than down at times, resulting in catches. We also lost some key batters at first after inconsistent batting caused them to miss the ball and slow running to be stumped out. At ball 25 we had been whittled down to 3 batters and only had 8 rounders, I feared the worse.  Full credit to Annie, Lucy and Lily though, who dug in and battled it out, often hitting the ball for huge distances to keep adding to our total. All 3 gave our supporters plenty to cheer about and caused the Denstone team plenty of headaches as they started to fall out and bicker and keep swapping positions in the deep. Meanwhile our 3 girls kept their heads and enjoyed it!  Eventually Annie fell at ball 49, but they all did really well to last that long and kept us in the game.

We switched to the usual 36 good balls for the 2nd innings.  The Denstone big hitters were keen to get even, adding 5 rounders to their total just from the first 9 balls. We dug in, communicated well and changed our positions in the deep, responding to where each girl hit and demonstrating far better team work in this game. We had whittled the Densone team down to one batter by ball 36 too and we still had 3 batters left at the end of our innings. A very long, high scoring, exciting game, with us fielding and batting far better than the previous game. We also demonstrated more pace around the posts and now need to show more pace to first if we miss the ball.

A great team performance, well done girls, we are getting there!
