This was a good team performance by all of our girls, in a game that saw us having a larger squad than normal, 13 in total, but this certainly wasn’t an unlucky number for us! Having won the toss, captain Lily put us into field first, giving us the edge from the start. The deeps played well, reacting quickly to balls hit their way and going for catches. Sometimes we forgot our long barrier, but on the whole it was a solid performance by all, with Olivia C being outstanding and Jess RS stepping into her sister’s position for this game, covering 2nd post really well. Bowler Nancy S also covered the posts well, to optimize stumping opportunities. Backstop Emma H was again on good form, covering 4th post and throwing very accurate balls to Lily on 1st, with them stumping out 3 players in a row at one point, well done you two! Grace Dieu were all out by the 34th ball and we had kept their score down to 6½.
We batted well, with Olivia C, Jess RS, Nancy S, Emma H and Lucy R all connecting well with the ball. We did not always look for the gaps in the field, however, so the Grace Dieu fielders initially often caused us to stop after scoring a half rounder. We were quick to capitalize on Grace Dieu fielding errors though, increasing in batting confidence as the innings progressed, to run fast in order to make a full rounder, with Georgy H being particularly adept at this.
Our 2nd innings had to be shortened due to ominous dark clouds looming and persistent rain showers causing the pitch to be potentially dangerous. Both teams faced a further 18 good balls, with Grace Dieu batting better in this innings to add a further 7½ rounders to their total. Being the second team to bat the pitch was proving to be slippy in places, with Harriet R falling at 1st post after running fast to ensure she stayed in. It also became too dangerous for us to risk it to 2nd in order to secure a half rounder from a backwards hit. Nonetheless, with Arabella H joining the big hitters in this batting innings, we stacked a further 7 on to our total to comfortably win the game.
All in all a good team performance from this large squad of girls, who are playing with so much more confidence and skill, compared to the start of the season. Well played everybody and thanks to our loyal supporters, who braved the elements and uncertain weather in order to cheer us on.
