After the glorious weather experienced throughout the Easter holiday we were very disappointed to lose our first two fixtures to poor weather; particularly the Sunday Tournament at Wrekin, which would have enabled us to play against some different opposition. Despite short, sharp showers en route to Rotherham, the weather there remained fine with the pitch we played on being very dry. Hill House were able to field two teams comprising entirely of under 13 girls and with rounders being their only sport of the term, were organized, experienced and well drilled.
Having won the toss, our new school rounders captain Lily S, expertly elected for us to field first. Bowler Nancy S mixed up her delivery really well, in order to keep the Hill House batters on their toes. Having recently perfected her donkey drops she delivered some super balls, but unfortunately did not always get away with them by the Hill House coach in the first innings. Our deeps were tested with some super hits by the batters, with the hard, dry ground proving to be very difficult to predict, if a ball bounced. Olivia C, Arabella H and Annie GP have fantastic over arm throws, but we now need to be faster to react if a ball comes our way. Several of our fielders also shirked their catches, allowing the ball to bounce first and with the dry ground this was not always a good option to take. That said, Emma H made a fabulous catch on a behind hit, having to move a huge distance to take it and her and Lily S on 1st post, soon stumped many players out who missed the ball.
The girls went into bat shocked by the 16 rounders total scored by Hill House. However, we also tested the deeps superbly, with Emma H batting consistently well throughout the innings, and Chloe RS, Arabella H, Nancy S, Jess RS and Olivia C pulling out some good, hard hits on occasion. We also worked hard to scrape the halves and trailed by three rounders at half time.
In the second innings we quickly whittled the Hill House batters down to three, with one being a key player. On several occasions we could have ended the innings, but momentary lapses of concentration prevented us from doing so. We did manage to get the two weaker players out, but the good batter remained in for the final two balls of the game. We collected the ball better in this innings, but were often too slow to return it, a little bit faster with our throw and we could have stopped her at 3rd or even stumped her out. Some liberal interpretations of the rules caused our girls to reach saturation point and instead of biting the bullet and using the batting innings to get even, they allowed themselves to become distracted, causing us to not bat as well as we could have done. We did score some super rounders in this innings and added greatly to our total; but now need to be far more consistent when hitting the ball, rather than the odd good hit, we should be hitting every ball delivered in this way.
A reasonable result, against a school that only play rounders in games and PE this term. If we work on our batting consistency; faster reactions in the field; more accurate and faster delivery of our throws and better focus throughout all four innings we will be awesome! Thanks to everyone who came to support the girls.
