Having lost the toss, we were put in to bat and seemed still to be in journey mode, with the Wellow fielders quickly catching out two batters. We lacked batting consistency, with some players missing the ball and being stumped out at first. It was a poor batting innings, for us with a low scoring tally. There were flashes of good play in the fielding innings, with Nancy S bowling impressively, with her donkey drop balls keeping the Wellow big hitters on their toes. She also covered the posts impressively and was our most mobile fielder by far, with the rest of the girls needing to take a leaf out of her book. Our work in the deep needs far more practice and determination, we shirked the catches, moving out of their way to let them bounce first. We were slow to collect the balls and return them also. Our throws tended to be too powerful when it was a short distance, or too weak for a longer distance and the Wellow girls capitalized on our errors.
In the second innings we batted better, with Olivia C, Emma H, Nancy S and Arabella H hitting the ball more consistently. Our pace at times around the posts was too slow, only enabling us to get to third on a super hit though. We also still directed it to the good deep fielder, who reacted quickly to balls and travelled some great distances to enjoy catching us out. Some of our players lost focus in the second innings and all of the girls fielding in the deep need to react more quickly and get down faster to stop the balls, with little evidence of long barrier fielding technique being used in this game. The Wellow big hitters were also very fast around the posts, although we did work harder at collecting the balls coming in from the deeps in this innings and were able to stop the girls at 3rd post on occasion.
There is much to do to improve on our fielding, but at times we show we do have the necessary skills when batting and fielding. I would now like to see more catches being taken and not avoided please - the elation of catching a player out will soon outweigh any discomfort experienced when making the catch! Also a lot more team spirit, encouragement of each other and DETERMINATION!
