A great day’s rugby and a debut for the team sadly deprived of their captain Rufus L. The excitement began at the weigh in with Freddie 4 ounces shy of the maximum limit and James exactly on the limit and therefore giving us two of the largest legal players in the tournament.
Acting in his stead Freddie R-S lead an immediate victory stampede against SMH with a succession of tries to Max H, Seth A, James B, David C, Oliver N, Dominic A and Freddie. Oliver converted 5 of these to make it a stupendous 47-0 win and great opening game.
Next up was Denstone, where S.Anselm’s stride ahead by 3 tries from Max, Harry R-S and Seth. Unfortunately the referee was keen to even the score with a succession of free kicks and penalties. Sadly Harry was injured during a gallant one on one which meant the finish of his spell at the tournament. Replacement Alfred was fired up and ready, but unable to add to the final tally. We finished the game winning 19-17
The Grange were next on the schedule and put up a good fight restricting our score rate to only 3 tries; Dave, Seth and Freddie with 2 conversions from Ollie. The final whistle blew leaving us the victors at 19-10
Giggleswick were a solid operation, but S.Anselm’s had found form and trys were battered through the opposition time after time from; James (3), Freddie (2), Seth and Dominic with Ollie hitting 6 out of the 7 conversions with an impressive display of accuracy.
The final team in our draw was Prestfelde who valiantly tried to defend against the onslaught of tries from; James (3), Fred (2), Seth, Ollie, Dominic and David. Ollie achieved another great spell of kicking with 7 conversions. A great win at 59-0 secured our appearance in the final.
The final was always set to be a challenge as similarly undefeated Manchester Grammar School had looked daunting throughout in there group. Anselm’s were forced to defend from the off and unfortunately succumbed to the great 7’s play of the tournaments winners. Although we got close, we were unable to put in a try. The match ended in a 26-0 win to MGS leaving S.Anselm’s in overall 2nd place from 12 teams which was an epic result. Well done guys a superb outing!
