Player of the match: Georgina H (An outstanding performance both in midfield and defence).
On Wednesday, the 1st VII and 2nd VII went to Aurora Sports ground to play Hill House at seven a side hockey. The weather was horrific – wet and bleak but the 1st VII did not let this dampen their performance. In the first five minutes of the first half, it was very much end to end ball and it certainly was going to be a close match. However, S. Anselm’s suddenly found their form and consistently gained possession due to excellent defence from Georgina H and Jessica R-S. S. Anselm’s were most certainly in control of the game, Arabella H, Chloe R-S, Annie G-P and Lily S were working well as a unit and created many opportunities for shots inside the D. Olivia C (GK) did not need to make any saves in the first half, however, the team were confident having her at the back just in case of any Shots on goal from Hill House. It was especially super to see Lily S utilising the coaching points raised in Monday’s training session and winning space and ground with the ball. The half time score was 0 – 0. S. Anselm’s had been very unlucky not to have scored in the first half due to the amount of attempts on the oppositions goal. In the second half, Alice S came on a Goal Keeper, making her debut for the 1st VII as well as Annie G-P and Jessica R-S switching positions. The key focus for the second half was to pressurise the opposition on self take, tackle-possession- confidence on the ball. These were all very much utilised in the second half and the ball flowed brilliantly between players. Annie G-P was particularly impressive as Right back and Jessica R-S on right mid field. Approximately 8 minutes before the end of the match, Lily S skilfully took the ball into the D to create the shot on goal and S. Anselm’s went up 1 – 0. Well done Lily! After the excellent performance from the whole team, S. Anselm’s really did deserve a goal. With only minutes to go, Hill House suddenly got a break in play reacting to being 1 – 0 down. Their Centre Forward hit hard in the D and Alice S(GK) made 2 excellent saves to ensure that S. Anselm’s stayed ahead until the final whistle. Overall, another impressive performance from the dynamic team despite the weather! Thank you to our parents for their support in such terrible conditions. Lets hope for sunshine in our next fixture!
