JET Cup – 2nd Round
S. Anselm’s 103 all out (24 overs) lost to Birkdale 169-2 (25 overs) by 66 runs
On a cold damp afternoon the 1st XI travelled to Birkdale’s Castle Dyke Ground for a 2nd Round JET Cup match. The match was played on a damp green pitch. S. Anselm's won the toss and asked Birkdale to bat. The two opening batsmen were assured and good players, but the S.Anselm's bowlers bowled too many poor deliveries allowing the batsmen easy scoring opportunities with 50 being scored in the first 7 overs. David C then bowled really well and made the breakthrough bowling one of the openers. However, none of the other bowlers could bowl the right lines and lengths and the Birkdale pairing added 100 in quick time.Jack M-M stemmed the tide and picked up a wicket but Birkdale posted 169 for 2 wickets in their allotted 25 overs.
James B and Charles B made a steady start before James made an error of judgment and was dismissed for 6 and Charles followed shortly for 8. Max H also played the wrong shot and was dismissed for nought. S. Anselm’s were showing little technique to counter the accurate Birkdale bowlers. Rufus L and Freddie H mounted a mini recovery and took the score to 45 before Rufus who scored a solid 23 was one of two wickets to fall quickly plunging S. Anselm’s into deep trouble, Jack H for nought being the other victim. Freddie H and Ollie N tried to add some respectability to the score and added 25 , before they departed for 11 and 13 respectively. John W misjudged a single and was run out for nought. David C hit some lusty blows including a massive six before being bowled for 15. Jack M-M and Will A took the score past 100 before Jack was last man out for 8, Will being 3 not out.
After the euphoria of the day before this really brought the team down to earth and they all knew they had not performed as they could. They must believe in themselves and apply themselves on every occasion. A match to forget and Wednesday is another day.
