The score does not reflect the nature of the game. This was a very exciting game and for the majority of the hour it could have gone either way. S. Anselm’s were the first to score with some terrific pressure off a ball sent over the top by the midfield. A lack of aggressive defence and a moment of indecision meant Ranby were able to equalise before half time.
The second half saw Ranby pressuring our defenders who found it difficult to cope with some of their bigger, quicker and stronger boys. We failed to finish some good chances up front and our defence let themselves be turned too often and left big gaps at critical times and this allowed Ranby to get well ahead.
However, the team played so much better than they had the week before. Our defence was working better and was tighter, our midfield and strikers looked much more confident and pieced together some outstanding passages. Andy C managed to pump the ball over the Ranby players to give something for Elliot T and Edward S to chase. So we had improved on some key weak areas. Unfortunately we still needed to be more aggressive in the tackle, more clinical with our finishing and more decisive with our clearances and passing.
This was a promising game and I was proud of the lads but it was also a game that we could have won with a bit more aggression, confidence and focus.
