What a difference a week makes, with the cricket 1stXI struggling for form they recorded their second win in a week at Ranby Houseon Saturday. With four boys making their first appearances for the 1stXI and one boy only making his second appearance an inexperienced side took tothe field.Having won the toss and electing to field first, S.Anselm’s worked asa unit and all the fielders supported the bowlers excellently. Tom B’s was alittle wayward initially, but George M was bowling well at the other end andwas unlucky not to take a wicket, his 4 overs only costing 5 runs. James C andDigby D bowled excellently without luck and only conceded 14 runs in 7collective overs. Then came the turn of the slow bowlers, with the leg spinnersWilliam S and John B bowling in tandem Ranby were really struggling to increasetheir scoring rate, with both William and John extracting turn from a helpfulpitch. William was really unlucky not to take a wicket but his 6 overs stillonly cost 22 runs. John’s 7 overs cost 22 runs but he took 3 excellent wickets.Ben D bowled 2 tight overs at the death and took 2 wickets at the cost of only8 runs. The Ranby innings came to a close and they had reached 90-5 from theirallotted 30 overs.

The pitch was not easy to bat on and whilst the total S.Anselm’swere chasing was not large they would have to work hard to record a victory. The innings did not get off to a good start with James C departing in the thirdover for nought with the total on 3. This brought Tom B to the wicket to joincaptain George M, both of whom played with great determination.Tom B hit theball very hard and was particularly severe on any loose deliveries, whilstGeorge M was rotating the strike well and nudging singles to keep thescoreboard moving. The score was 32-1 from 13 overs so 60 runs were requiredfrom the remaining 17 overs. With the weather closing in both batsmen went fortheir shots and ran well between the wickets. George M was first to depart runout for 23, Tom B was also run out by a direct hit shortly afterwards for anexcellent 42 which included 5 fours and 2 sixes. The total however had reached75 by this time and with some lusty blows by Jordan W 11 not out and William S6 not out the total was reached for the loss of only 3 wickets with 9 oversstill remaining. This was a fine victory by 7 wickets and all 11 playerscontributed fully to this win with excellent team spirit and a realdetermination to succeed.
