The boys were raring to go on the back of three extra practice sessions and all of them showing the required focus and effort required for success, they all wanted to register their first win of the season. Jack H won the toss and asked Terra Nova to bat in a timed match that didn’t start until 2.50pm and with a fixed finish time of 6pm, time was short and positive, attacking cricket needed to be played to force a victory, on a slow low pitch.
Paddy D opened the bowling and how hard had he worked to sort up his approach to the wicket since Saturday’s match? It was now smooth and he bowled really well, making a breakthrough in his second over and his first spell of 4 overs only went for 3 runs. Jack H was bowling well at the other end and was unlucky not to take a wicket in his spell of 4 overs. Will A bowled four nice overs for 11 runs, but it was the introduction of Ed S that was to make an impact, he bowled his four overs at a miserly cost of 9 runs and took three wickets including the prized scalp of the Terra Nova captain for a duck. Charlie H, Jack M-M and Elliott W all took a wicket each. At tea Terra Nova had scored 88 for 7 in 24 overs , what a healthy over rate! Terra Nova batted on after tea and Elliott W with two further wickets and Paddy D with another wicket polished off the tail and Terra Nova were dismissed for 103 in 29.2 overs. The bowling had been good and the fielding sharp.
This left us 70 minutes batting to score the required total. With the Terra Nova captain a county opening bowler and bowling at a decent pace it wouldn’t be all plain sailing. The openers Hugo R and William W stuck to the task and didn’t give an inch keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Will was first to depart with the score on 16, Freddie H came to the wicket and continued his rich vein of form hitting some lovely shots. Hugo was just getting into his stride when he misjudged a full toss and gave the bowler a comfortable return catch departing for 17( three 4’s). Jack M-M came to the crease and started really well with a thunderous straight drive and with fantastic running between the wicket he and Freddie kept proceedings on target, despite a leisurely over rate from the opposition. Jack departed for 21 (three 4’s) with the total on 68. Jack H departed quickly afterwards, bringing Charlie H to the crease, both he and Freddie continued to play positively with time ticking by and with 10 minutes (possibly 3 overs) left 16 runs were still required. Freddie and Charlie only needed 11 balls to hit the remaining runs and a very good victory was secured by 6 wickets off only 18.5 overs. Freddie finishing on 40 not out (seven 4’s) and Charlie 14 not out (three 4’s)
This was a fantastic team performance and shows just how far the team have come over the past couple of weeks, willing to practice and listen well.
I am really proud of their efforts and attitude. Well done.
