The first match of the season was eagerly awaited and the team were raring to go.
Captain Jack H won the toss and asked Wellow House to bat. Paddy D opened the bowling and second ball bowled the Wellow opener with an in swinging yorker a fantastic start, Paddy continued to bowl well and dismissed the other opener shortly afterwards. At the other end Jack M-M was bowling steadily whilst never really threatening to take a wicket. The support bowlers then failed to bowl consistent lines and lengths allowing the Wellow batsmen to settle and one batsmen in particular punished any loose delivery bowled and Wellow’s total was mounting at a substantial rate. John W eventually dismissed the danger man, Jzack M-M taking a good catch, but not before he had scored 88. John took one further wicket, Paddy returned to take one more wicket making his haul 3 for the match and Elliott W took the other wicket to fall. The fielding was poor with misfields and a couple of dropped catches costing the side dear.Wellow’s total of 149 off 25 overs was a good one.
Wellow possessed a swift bowler but there will be quicker than this during the season! The S.Anselm’s innings began disastrously with Jack M-M being bowled second ball without scoring, playing all round a straight one, beaten by pace and not moving his feet. Paddy C batted courageously taking the majority of balls from the quick man and along with Jack H began to rebuild the reply. Jack was dismissed just before tea for 13. Freddie H threatened for a moment but chose the wrong ball to attack and offered an easy catch which was comfortably taken he made 11. Paddy C was next to fall having amassed 23 runs, he needs to run better between the wickets and punish the loose deliveries. The S.Anselm’s reply was beginning to fall behind the required run rate but John W and Charlie H had a good partnership with John being particularly severe on any short balls he mad a very good 29 (5 fours) and perished trying to push the score along playing across the line to a straight ball. Charlie perished in the same way for 9. The remainder of the batsmen all struggled against accurate bowling Edward S 5, Elliot W 3, Alex W 0, Paddy D 0 with Will W unbeaten on 8.
A disappointing result, losing by 19 runs. More consistent bowling backed up by better fielding would have restricted the Wellow batsmen. Better foot movement and shot selection when batting would have got us close to the Wellow score. Plenty to work upon in practice sessions, but some pleasing aspects to the teams play.
