This match was a splendid end to our short lived season of soccer. Sadly as usual the opening minutes were a dismal display of weak marking which allowed the opposition to slot in the first goal. Antoine B had a superb early opportunity as the Wellow keeper fumbled and yielded the ball, however Antoine couldn’t just give it enough to get it across the line and their resourceful keeper managed to grab it in the mouth of the goal.
The first breakthrough came from an Edward S assist an Elliot T finish and at one all the play started to descend chaotically with the S.Anselm’s defence really struggling to be effective. Cameron D was on better form, but still could not prevent Wellow from sneaking ahead. This was again equalised by the Edward – Elliot combination, with a fine left foot finish from the latter.
The second half of the game was of a far higher standard. Paddy D was exemplary in his defensive efforts, with an unsurpassed work rate. The balance of play started to tip in S.Anselm’s favour, but they were still struggling to creep ahead. An unlucky penalty decision cost them a goal and a truly awesome shot from the Wellow midfield another. However in the last ten minutes S.Anselm’s were able to lift their game once again and played their best football of the season. This produced a fine goal from Captain Will A.
Elliot T managed to secure Anselm’s 4th goal with a beautiful left foot effort to complete his hat-trick. In the closing minutes of the game Edward S finally managed to hit the winner and close out the match. This was an awesome performance and sadly the final appearance together of this years 1st XI, never the less a great way to end the season.
Man of the match: Elliot T for a great hat-trick
Well done lads you’ve stuck with it throughout a pretty hard season and some real adversity. It’s nice to finish on a winning note. Thanks for your efforts.
