1st XI v Witham Hall
S.Anselm’s 111- 7 (25 overs) lost to Witham Hall 151-6 (25 overs) by 40 runs
Man of the Match James B
A pleasing start to the season although the side were eventually well beaten. Witham Hall batting first punished some loose bowling by Tom B and Max H with 55 runs coming from the opening 8 overs. The introduction of James Bourn and George M slowed the run rate and a breakthrough was made with an excellent piece of fielding by James C resulting in one of the Witham openers being run out. With James B then dismissing the other opener with a good ball and George M in the middle of tight spell and picking up some wickets Witham were reduced to 80-5 and S.Anselm’s were in sight of dismissing the opposition for a low score. However, the support bowlers Rufus L, Charlie T and Luke T were unable to prevent Witham posting a very competitive total of 151-6.
S.Anselm’s reply began very brightly with William S and James B adding an opening partnership of 50 runs in 10 overs, with James B being severe on any bad balls hitting 2 sixes and 5 fours. The introduction of some slower bowling saw James B dismissed for an excellent score of 40 and this would prove to be the turning point of the match. None of the other batsman Max H, Tom B, George M , James C were able to play any forcing shots and played and missed far too often. Jordan W produced a late flurry of runs hitting a six and 2 fours in his quick fire score of 18. S.Anselm’s innings closed with us being 40 runs short of our target and a disappointing loss recorded. The areas for improvement in the next match are more alert and sharper fielding, straighter and fuller length bowling and more importantly better shot selection and foot movement when batting. There is promise but lots of hard work is necessary in the practice sessions.
