The brave 1st XI took on the challenge of playing Worksop's U14s at home. Despite the obvious size difference the game play was exceedingly well matched. Worksop developed an early edge in the game and threatened the defenders around the D, but could not complete on goal. The Anselm's defence was incredible in the ferocity with Alfred H, Rob H and James B making some significant tackles. Sadly after ten minutes or barrage a single shot was able to penetrate past the guardians.
This was enough to really develop the game and enlivened the Anselm's team. The passing game was hampered by the more powerful Worksop players, but the stick control was definitely in favour of S. Anselm's. Toward the end of the first half the dominance of Anselm's in the midfield with Rufus L and Freddie R-S finally paid off, allowing James C the space to break through into the opposition D and begin an elusive single handed effort to beat the goalie, which was achieved with stunning success.
The second half began one all and was played in good spirits, but with neither side able to beat the deadlock until the last 2 minutes of the game. Awarded a short corner, Worksop were able to convert this to a 2 -1 lead. With only moments to play Anselm's lifted their game-play to a frenzied level. Sadly despite a last second short corner the equaliser escaped them.
Result: 2-1 loss.
All the boys should be praised for the highly commendable tenacity with which the game was played.
