They say a win is a win and it doesn’t matter how it comes. On the other hand, it was disappointing not to see a demonstration of fast flowing rugby and complete domination of the ball which, today, S. Anselm’s had the potential to achieve. We clearly had the opposition under the cosh from the start and, if it was not for a very very fast pressing defence that was able to spoil our possession, we would have been able to link together some dynamic phases and accumulate a great number of scores; I have no doubt!
As it was, the boys still had a generous portion of the possession and looked dangerous. Forwards were keen to carry and did very well to retain possession in the rucks. The scrum was solid and the lineout functioned as expected. Unfortunately, our boys did make a number of unnecessary handling errors and our kicks were not of their usual flawless nature. This, combined with too much traffic in the ‘ten channel’ and a very ‘keen’ opposition defence, resulted in missed opportunities and an element of attrition.
Fast flowing game or not, a number of boys held up their hands and it was particularly deserved when Elliott W showed real determination and, indeed, channelled aggression to surge over the line for a wonderful try. Other special mentions go to the Captain Alex V and try scorers Kevin H, Charlie H and Jon W.
A very solid team performance that did not quite achieve its potential.
