1st XV v Lady Manners Lost 12-10

This was always going to be a challenging match and was made more so with the muddiest of pitches. S.Anselm’s had a very slow start to the game and seemed initially unable to compete at breakdowns frequently being turned over and allowing Lady Manners to develop too many phases. This weaker defensive play was inevitably going to concede a try. Lady Manners seemed to be rising well to the conflict and were quick to put a second, converted try over the line.
S.Anselm’s redoubled their effort and pushed the opposition back into their 22, when sadly skipper, Rufus was removed from play with an injury. With the captain missing from the field S.Anselm’s worked hard to avoid complete capitulation. A welcome break at half time allowed some consolidation with Max moving to play at ten. In the second half S.Anselm’s were a different team and clearly began to edge ahead in the war of attrition that had developed. Finally managing to retain the ball the forwards were placed within a short charge of the opposition line and James Bwas quick to seize this opportunity.
The next try was harder to come by and with three being disallowed it took real determination to finally put a second try down in the hands of Freddie R-S. The second half provided some of the finest spirit of the season and although the trench warfare like conditions did not allow for much delicate play there were some gargantuan efforts. Matthew B made an immediate impact on play and made several good runs. Dominic A was truly awesome with his tackling and at one point made 40 metres single handed through the opposition pack.

The second try coming moments from the close of the game was tantalisingly convertible, but the pressure was just too great. There was just not enough time left on the clock to put on any further points.
The game was a great outing enjoyed by both teams alike and a truly fitting ending to a terrific season’s rugby. The man of the match must be Dominic A who has worked hard to climb through the ranks of the 3rd and 2nd XV's and who was really outstanding in his commitment.
It has been truly both an honour and a pleasure to accompany the team throughout the season. Well done guys!
