S. Anselms 7 – 12 Spratton Hall
This was a bruising encounter by two sides that were playing well drilled and good looking rugby. There was certainly no prisoners in a game that saw some big hits from both sides.
The main point of contest was at the breakdown on the ground. Both sides had players who were capable of getting to the breakdown quickly, and then staying on their feet, and ripping. When these players got nudges from behind it was tough to weigh up if players were going over and killing the ball, or if at U13 level it was one to let go. The game was played in the middle of the park, with no side really threatening the oppositions try line. Despite this it was a thrilling half of rugby with both sides really trying hard to penetrate.
0-0 at half time the game was there for the winning. S. Anselms scored first with yet another strong run by Andrew C who broke a number of tackles and went around to score near the posts. The conversion gave S. Anselms a cushion that was quickly taken away by a flowing Spratton move and try. The missed conversion might have been costly, but Spratton snuck over for another try which they converted.
Final score of 7-12 was possibly a fair reflection. Spratton’s game looked a little more polished, but it was very close.
A good performance by us 4/5 stars
Man of the match: Andrew C, for his combative running and ferocious tackling – some of which really lifted the side.
