Man of the Match: Theo H, for his superb tackling, support play and intelligent choice of options at the breakdown.
They say that the sign of a good team is when they don’t play at their best and still win. In that case, we are definitely becoming a good team. This was a pragmatic, hard fought win against a side led by a very powerful Cheshire No 8 who made us fight for every yard.
Whether it was the journey or the vast quantity of sausages eaten at break and lunch, I am not sure, but we were not the fluent attacking team that we have become of late. The 1st half was forwards dominated, with our pack working very hard to gain ground. When the backs did see the ball our running was too lateral and did not pose the usual threat. Phase after phase of pick and drive did, however, lead to two tries, and with their No 8 scoring after picking up from the base of a scrum 20 metres out, we turned round 12–7 up.
Only one try up at half time, our play was more dynamic in the 2nd half, with more pace in attack and slightly better lines of running. Tries from Charlie S, Matthew N, Ed S and Bertie S, with two conversions by Isaac S, put the game beyond Terra Nova.
Congratulations to Ali C, who made his 1st Team debut. Although he saw little of the ball, Ali covered his opposite man with ease and bravely put his body on the line, in one instance recreating the Mike Catt v Jonah Lomu tackle from the 1995 World Cup!
