1st XV vs Wellow House
After the rather sobering experience against Winchester House last weekend, this was a very different afternoon of Rugby as S. Anselm's got back to winning ways with an imposing win over a rather limited Wellow House team.
Gale force winds and driving rain meant that conditions would definitely play a major role in the style of rugby that we could play and we decided that simplicity was the best way forward; from the very first whistle it was apparent that if we played to our game plan (ensuring that we entered contact on our own terms and ran the correct lines) we would have few problems.
For the majority of the first half we played our best rugby of the season to date. The forwards were totally dominant and the backs ran through their repertoire of moves causing havoc in the Wellow defence. The XV were a pleasure to watch as S. Anselm's ran in six tries in less than twenty five minutes.
The second half started in a similar fashion and another try followed almost immediately from the kick off. Mr. Northcott then tightened up on his refereeing and made us work very hard for each and every yard gained. That we managed to score a further four tries was very encouraging although we looked less than polished as the game wore on.
In short this was a most promising performance (from both individuals and as a team) and one that stands us in good stead for the match against Ranby House at the weekend.
There is, as ever, still much work to be done. We lacked penetration in the second half, our rucking lost its edge as the match wore on and we took a number of wrong options towards the final whistle. I look forward to our games session on Friday when we will attempt to iron out some of these problems.
