2nd IX v Denstone College Lost 21 - 18

POM : Roxanne B – Outstanding !

In the first innings, S. Anselm’s batted first and were very determined to start off well and put (and certainly did) the pressure on. I was excited about the team’s performance after the standard of singing in the minibus on the way to Denstone College. It was super to see Arabella A leading the way scoring the first rounder of the game and this was followed by a further 2 full rounders from Arabella A and a final full rounder from Alice S. The S. Anselm’s' team kept focussed and kept scoring crucial half rounders and finished the first batting innings with 10 rounders – a great start! Good solid performances from Ella R, Ella T, Issy H, Immy H and Fran B.

It was time for S. Anselm’s to field and they were put under pressure with excellent hitting from Denstone. When the girls were focussed and ready, the fielding was top class. However, too many fielding errors were made due to being too laid back and unprepared which allowed the opposition to score 11 rounders in their first innings.

However, good catches were made by Roxanne B and Fran F at backstop. Denstone also scored a number of half rounders due to silly mistakes made by S. Anselm’s. However, after a good team talk at half time, S. Anselm’s were certainly ready to increase the score and try and win the match against a tough side.

In the second innings, Hatty R got off to a flying start scoring a full rounder in the first ball of the second innings. This certainly set the tone for the remainder of the batting innings for S. Anselm’s. It was super to see Hatty, Roxanne (scoring 3 rounders) and Ella T all scoring crucial points for S. Anselm’s.  Ella N, Erin S, Alice S, Ella R, Issy H and Immy H all scored half rounders and it was super to hear lots of encouragement and motivation for the whole team from Ella T – Great to hear Ella and thank you!

The final score at the end of the second innings was 18 rounders for S. Anselm’s. S. Anselm’s now needed to field tight and concentrate on keeping the scoreline to a minimum. This was certainly not the case in the first 10 balls of the game. S. Anselm’s misfielded silly balls in the deep field which allowed Denstone to score full rounders easily. The pressure was on and it was great to see good consistent bowling from Alice S and tight fielding from Fran F as backstop. Fran F again took a super catch behind. Along with Arabella A taking a catch and run out in the deep field, Ella N fielding tightly behind second post and fielding the ball to urge run outs at second and fourth post. Alice S bowled and caught an amazing catch which just highlights that her reactions are top class! Erin S fielded really well in 3rd deep and certainly put pressure on, but Denstone quietly scored a few more half rounders towards the end of the match and final scoreline for Denstone was 21 rounders.

Overall Mrs Northcott was over the moon with the level of play from the whole team. To play against a tough side and end the day with a result of 21 – 18 to Denstone, is a fine performance from all players. What was hugely impressive today was the amount of support and encouragement that the whole team gave to each other. This certainly highlights the ethos at S. Anselm’s of which I am very proud to be part of. Thank you girls for a super afternoon of sport! Your singing both on the way and back from Denstone was impressive, which reflects you as a team overall today!
