2nd VII v Terra Nova Won 27-0

Players of the Match Jessica RS & Erin S

This match was a pleasure to watch and certainly our best performance to date, when everything just seem to click perfectly together. The team worked fluidly together, the defence was swift and effective, the centre court tighter and had more vision and the shooters were on top form.

In the first quarter we went 6-0 up. (Alice S 4, Lucy 2).  Team play was tight. It was fantastic to see the girls putting drills into practise, coming forward for the ball. Roxanne B at Goal Defence was helpful driving the ball up the court and helping out in the centre as well as defensive third. Arabella A also had a good game and contributed to bringing the ball up court. She stuck with her player and really stopped her opposition getting the ball.

By half time the score was 14-0. Lucy R swopped with Alice S, Goal Attack to Goal Shooter, and both girls continued with their accurate shooting (Lucy R 4, Alice S 4). Jess RS was working very hard and placed some lovely long and accurate balls into the circle. She did well to see these opportunities and the attackers responded superbly.

After the third quarter the girls added more goals and were 21-0 up (Lucy R 5, Alice S 2). Terra Nova came back more strongly, but unfortunately couldn’t get the ball in the net despite having chances. Here the defensive combination of Erin S and Roxanne B worked very hard. Erin S took some great interceptions and also was able to pick up some rebounds. I was also impressed by how she kept the ball in play and stabilised herself after catches, when it would have been easy to do footwork or step out of the court.

The full time score was 27-0 (Lucy R 6, Alice S). Again Terra Nova rallied, but just could not get the ball in the net. Our play was fluid on court and Ella N had more impact now in centre court, switching sides with Jess RS when necessary and holding back towards our circle. This meant there was more room for play and the sharp, short passing allowed SA to keep control of the game and drive the ball toward the goal.

Thank you to all the spectators on the back line. The girls were very proud of their play and really keen to share the score with you.

For our next match we need to build on this great performance. Centre passes and backline passes were better, but will still need to be sharper against a stronger team. The play across the centre third was also much improved, but we will need to think of alternatives to the long balls if we come across taller defence.
