Our second outing was to be a 25 over fixture against Denstone College and the outcome of the toss resulted in SA being asked to bat first. The boys were confident following our initial convincing victory and we were looking to build the tempo early on in our batting efforts. However, this was not to be the case...
After three overs we had lost three wickets with a great deal of credit going to Denstone’s County ‘all rounder’: Theo H was run out for 1 (poor communication between our opening pair) and I can testify that Matthew N and Lewis H were both bowled for ducks off two cracking deliveries; I confess I was a little concerned at this stage.
However, a strength of this team is the depth we have in bowling and batting. Isaac S (I would say he above all has demonstrated significant technical ability with the bat) and Elliot W (our cool and calm Captain of the day) then stepped up and ensured the scoreboard ticked over to 71 before Elliot fell to the County star; bowled for a very tasty 35 runs (including 6 x 4’s). In the same over Andrew C was bowled and Alex W was run out; both for ducks. When Isaac was caught and bowled for 18 we had 81 runs on the board.
The tail enders were fantastic: Will H (who can certainly hit a bad ball) scored a quick 11 runs which included a gigantic 6, off no other than the county player who had proved the downfall of many, before eventually being bowled; Charlie S scored 33* (including 6 x 4’s) and Elliot T 13*.
After a worrying start 151 was pleasing!
Our bowling attack was superb. Elliot T was on fine form gaining 3 for 17 runs; most importantly he took the dangerous Denstone Captain’s wicket (LBW for only 19). Other notable bowling performances were from Elliot W (2 for 21 runs) and Lewis H (2 for 13 runs).
The boys were dynamic and mutually supportive and ensured Denstone were all out for 97 runs.
