A great start to the season for the 2nd team. Appearances are not everything, but our boys looked the part before the first ball was bowled; they were smart in their whites and I can now see that their posture and clear enthusiasm echoed the confidence they must have felt.
We lost the toss and were put into bat. Our opening pair knocked up a quick 22 before Theo H (10 runs) lost his wicket to a straight one that stayed low. The opening pair had really set the tempo by the time this first wicket fell.
Matthew N (16 runs) was next to fall with a score of 57 on the board, again bowled, but not before he had hit a couple of neat boundaries.
Isaac S looked in great shape at the crease and he had scored 31 runs including 5 x 4s before he was caught and bowled with a team score of 84 on the board.
Lewis H smashed a quick 30 including a big 6 and 4 x 4s, before he was caught out. A score of 115 was on the board at this stage.
Charlie S was next out for 15 runs with a team score of 127 runs on the board. You can see that each batter contributed significantly to the run rate and overall total.
Alex T was run out for 9 and Elliott T was run out for 3. Communication will need to be worked on but each contributed to the tempo and their partner’s efforts.
Andrew C (40*) and Will H (13*) were left after the 25th over with a team total of 198; very impressive. Will H looked dangerous at the crease and Andrew, in particular, looks like a player to watch out for with a big 6 and 5 x 4s in his bag.
Under Alex T’s leadership, the boys who did not bat had the opportunity to bowl and the Wellow House Team were all out after 13 overs with only 38 runs on the board.
The fielding can be improved but the setting was offensive, the boys were very positive and each demonstrated leadership through constant encouragement.
The best bowling figures were: Elliott T and Isaac S who both had 3 for 2 (off 2 overs) and Lewis H 1 for 2 (off 1 over). For me, the most notable event was off Charlie L’s bowling (4 for 1) when a delivery flew off the bat over our WK (Matthew N); stood at square leg I saw the best school boy catch I have ever seen as Matthew N acrobatically leapt in the air in a backwards arc and caught the ball at full extension.
A great team performance!
