Result: S.Anselm’s 4 Grace Dieu 4
Players of the Match Andrew C & Antoine-Cyrus B
What an exciting match this was, can the coach cope with much more of this? The team battled away for the whole match and every player contributed in achieving a very creditable result against a talented team. The first 15 minutes of the match were scrappy with both sides seeking to stamp their authority, the match then livened up when Grace Dieu took the lead with a fortunate goal that looped off one of their players shins into the top right hand corner of the goal giving Alex T no chance. S.Anselm’s then strove for an equaliser with Charlie L, Andrew C, Hugo R and Antoine-Cyrus B dominating the midfield. The team looked especially threatening down the left where Antoine was linking well with Henry F, three chances were missed. The Grace Dieu goalkeeper then made a long clearance which eluded all the S.Anselm’s defenders leaving Alex T one on one with an attacker and the score was then 2-0 to Grace Dieu, which remained the score at Half Time.
After a little chat from the coach, the S.Anselm’s team came out all guns blazing, exploiting their dominance down the left with Antoine and Henry being very effective, Andrew was a real handful for the Grace Dieu defence and the battling of Charlie and Hugo was winning many 50/50 balls. Eventually S.Anselm’s made the breakthrough, when a hard cross from the left was turned spectacularly into the net by a Grace Dieu defender for an own goal. S.Anselm’s pushed hard for an equaliser which eventually came by way of a cheeky back heel from Henry in a goal mouth scramble. All now to play for at 2-2. The S.Anselm’s defence looked a little shaky and sure enough a penalty was conceded, Alex T nearly kept it out but we were once more behind. The team rallied magnificently and went down the other end immediately to equalise with Andrew C dispatching a very good cross with aplomb. The match was there to be won and Antoine cut in from the left wing and unleashed an unstoppable left foot shot into the goal, the S.Anselm’s team had taken a deserved lead. There was still yet another twist, with 30 seconds to go Grace Dieu broke away and their centre forward scored the equaliser, which is the way the match finished, a tremendous 4 all draw, a great credit to both teams.
