The conditions were a tad sticky (understatement, it was extremely soggy), for the final match of the season, the battle between mums and daughters. This year under the organised lead of Mrs Hinckley saw the mums being really well prepared. A training session the day before had alerted them to the conditions and it was great to see so many new pairs of boots being aired in public! The girls had adapted their usual sombre kit, with the leftovers of their trip to ‘Abbamania’ earlier in the week. I have not seen so much dayglo and fluorescent since I was a girl in the 80s, well done girls!!
So the stage was set, the half time refreshments ready, (courtesy of the dads), and the toss completed. The mums were off to a flying start, literally, as many found stopping in such wet conditions difficult! The girls put on a lot of pressure and on lots of occasions it became a mad scramble in the D, the girls fighting to score, the mums determined to clear it. Mrs Miller came into her own, timing her tackles superbly, whilst goalie Mrs Caudwell cleared lots of certain goals, with the aid of her lacrosse stick, (yes you did read that bit correctly!) Mrs John, Mrs Renshaw-Smith, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Harcus, Mrs Berry and Mrs Green all displayed impressive stick skills, stamina and a feisty determination to not let the girls have it their own way. Freya had the girls’ closest chances, hitting the ball from the outer edge of the D, but hitting the metal post of the goal. The mums also had a few breaks across the halfway line, but defence wise stayed firm, with the half-time score being 0 – 0.
Perhaps it was the cherry brandy in the mums half-time hot chocolate, or the fact that the girls suddenly realised their astro skills were not working on the soggy pitch, but suddenly they upped their game. Captain Georgie provided the first two goals, with two cracking hits that just proved to be too far for Mrs Caudwell’s lacrosse stick to save. Lydia scored the third, after a classic bit of goal hanging saw her in the right place at the right time. Shortly before the end after some feisty tussling by Georgia and her mum, a stick tackle saw the mums having a free hit. After being too close the ball was advanced 5m, which gave the mums the boost they needed. A pass from Mrs Harcus was picked up by Mrs Green, who powered the ball past goalie Grace.
A great atmosphere and fun occasion enjoyed by all the players and supporters, thanks to all the mums who played, and a huge thank you to Mrs Hinckley for her superb organisation and great team sheet with nifty diamond formation. Thanks to Mrs Northcott for her umpiring and assistance on the day, and Julie and her team for the much appreciated refreshments. Hope your back is ok Mrs Wilson and that the pitch makes a rapid recovery in time for the boys’ hockey season grounds men Mick and Kev! See you all for the netball next term!
