At S. Anselm’s College Art will consist of both Fine Art and Textiles. An emphasis will placed on learning new techniques and then developing a personal outcome in response to a title or a design brief.
In Year 9 pupils will have experience of working in both the Fine Art and Textiles areas. In the Michaelmas term pupils will spend half a term in Fine Art and half a term in Textiles. These first taster projects will help pupils decide on their possible GCSE option choices. In the Lent term and Summer terms the timetable will again be divided between the two areas, one term being a Fine Art based project and one being a Textile based project.
In Fine Art pupils will experience ways of working which include painting, drawing, photography, ICT and sculpture. In Textiles pupils will experience printing onto fabric, hand and machine embroidery techniques, batik and dyeing methods. When developing their own response to a starting point pupils will be encouraged to work from first hand resources and to gain inspiration by studying the work of Artists and looking at artefacts from other cultures, both contemporary and historical. Visits to Galleries, Museums and workshops will enable pupils to have direct engagement with original work and practice.
At GCSE level there will be the option of both Fine Art and Textiles GCSE. These will build on skills and working methods developed further down the school.
