In the evenings the Junior Boarders are lucky enough to have
story time with Miss Walker on the boys’ side and with Mrs Brailich on the
girls’ side. Recently the Junior Boys have been listening to Bob Hartman’s silly
and amusing Bible based stories. To see some of the macho rugby players really
sitting down and listening has been wonderful to see. On Thursday evening Bob
Hartman came to see the boarders for supper and an animated storytelling hour
in the library afterwards. Bob originally comes from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
and was in the Midlands visiting schools. Bob’s storytelling programme combines
traditional folk-tales from around the world, retold in his own inimitable
style, with his own inventive stories. Bob Hartman is author of over 70
published books including The Wolf who
Cried Boy and The Three Billy
Goats’ Stuff as well as Mr
Aesop’s Story Shop.
With the sofas
prepped and the rest of us sitting in a big circle we spent the next hour
listening and partaking in some of the most enjoyable songs and stories. At the
end of the evening and with the children all laughing their socks off, a couple
of boys presented Lin from the Derbyshire Village Mission charity with a cheque
and in return the boarders were given a signed copy of The Big Pig Stampede,
which I am sure they will enjoy reading.
A fabulous evening
and a huge thank you to Bob for coming to join us all the way from Pittsburgh
for the evening.
