Boys Games Report

On Tuesday the U8 and U9 rugby teams went to Barlborough Hall School to play. The U8 TAG rugby team showed some superb footwork and linking of players as we ‘barnstormed’ Barborough in the first half. Zach C and Caleb B looked particularly quick and elusive. As they game went on we were all calling for the ball and showing real confidence, with even the odd passing movement. A great win 8 – 3 win for our last game of the term.

The U9 team had drawn previously with Barlborough this term and knew they were in for a close game. Without Rufus H and Edward P we also were up against it. However with some powerful play and utilising our speed we scored two tries in the first half. Freddie H ran well and Goodluck O tackled aggressively but it was the whole team linking up that was the decisive difference in our 3-1 win.

On Wednesday the U11s played Westbourne, St Hugh’s and Ranby at Ranby. We started slightly slowly against Westbourne going two tries down however fought back with two tries ourselves. However Westbourne managed to score a winning third try. Against St Hugh’s our strong running and quick ruck ball gave us an 8 – 1 win. In our return match with Ranby who we had lost 4 – 3 to at home, we started strongly with Angus L, Archie C and Bruno K makes powerful runs. Our forwards rucked well and we won 3 – 1. Our U12s also had a small training match against Wellow. Despite reducing numbers our speed of ball, power at the ruck and ability to keep moving the ball led to a comfortable win.

On Saturday the U11 and 1St XIII teams travelled to Abberley Hall School in Worcestershire. We knew we would have two hard games and this proved to be the case. The U11’s battled away and when Abberley changed their team we competed in a 9 – 6 defeat. Progress has been made but Abberley played some impressive rugby. The 1st XIII started brightly with injured players back but a lack of match play. Both sides played a fast and expansive game with some great back movements and tackles in defence. First Abberley and then ourselves had chances but with some sustained pressure Abberley scored two tries before half-time. In the second-half, with a couple of knocks and ‘tired legs’ we were gradually worn down. Abberley had played some excellent rugby, strong at the breakdown and quick to move the ball into their backs.

This week sees our final fixtures with the U11s at Westbourne and the 1st XIII on tour to the Isle of Man next weekend.
