S. Anselm's

A full boarding and day school for boys and girls from Nursery to 16

Music at S. Anselm's

Music at S. Anselm's is vibrant and exciting, playing an integral role within the school. A broad and comprehensive range of weekly classroom music is delivered by specialist music teachers throughout the school from Nursery to the College which includes World Music, Western Classical Music, Opera, Blues and Popular Music.

To ensure that music remains at an exemplary standard, extra-curricular music is in abundance with over 16 weekly ensembles ranging from Swing Band to the prestigious Chapel Choir plus, termly ABRSM practical exams are undertaken and ABRSM music theory is taught regularly.

There are:

- An extensive team of dedicated music specialist teachers

- Over 200 weekly rotating music lessons

- Over 16 ensembles to choose from

- Regular professional workshops and excursions

The Music Department has its own dedicated building with 7 practice/teaching rooms equipped with pianos, and an electronic drum kit plus a large teaching room with 10 electronic keyboards, a harpsichord, harp and a dedicated professional recording studio. All main orchestral instruments plus voice and organ are taught by a team of professional visiting music teachers with lessons rotating on a weekly basis to avoid too much disruption of other academic lessons.

Venues include the Hargreaves Hall which is on site and Bakewell Parish Church, only a few minutes walk away. These are host to performances throughout the year both formal and in-formal. An important emphasis is placed upon pupils witnessing professionally performed music, therefore, workshops and excursions are a regular occurrence within the school calendar ranging from the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain to Chetham’s School of Music.

During 2016, the S. Anselm’s Choir toured Salzburg, Austria performing the Fauré Messe Basse in both Mondsee and Salzburg Cathedrals. Evensong was also performed at University College Oxford.

In-house competitions provide an exciting edge to music and S. Anselm’s School hosts an annual National Piano Competition with adjudication from Ben Andrew, Head of Keyboard at Stowe School Buckinghamshire and Peter Lawson, RNCM.
