On the afternoon Tuesday, 15th September the Kinder students were able to further their understanding of the river topic in the Geography classroom by visiting Burbage Brook on the Longshaw Estate and also the River Derwent at Curbar. They were able to measure the river channel cross-section, the flow and also the shape and size of the river sediment. All enjoyed the stunning views of the area and there were only a few wet shoes to report!
The students are now comparing the two sites back at school including drawing out accurate scale drawings and also proportional pie charts of the sediment size and shape. Mr Mortimer has been able to further the investigation by using the data in Mathematics lessons too. Kinder will also assess the extent to which this river fits the pattern of upland streams.
Dr. Stansfield also conducted some science investigations with the students. This included investigating water quality through pH testing, nitrate sampling and using a light metre.
