Anselm's hosted their first ever Rounders Festival, entering two teams of our own. Our visiting tour school Highfield also entered two teams and Witham Hall brought a team. The festival format was that of a round robin, so everybody benefitted from plenty of match play and the sunny weather ensured plenty of parents came along to support. The overall results were:

1st Highfield A

2nd Witham hall

3rd S. Anselm's Reds

4th highfield B

5th S. Anselm's Blues.

Blue Rounders Team

Well done to all the girls who played for the Blue team on Saturday. The standard of our fielding improved enormously as the afternoon progressed and we worked well as a team. We now need to work on our batting skills in order to score more rounders. Natalie captained the team in an organised way and Fran N produced some very accurate bowls. Amber managed some speedy stumpings on 2nd post and Charlotte’s fielding and long distance throws were outstanding at 3rd deep. Despite some challenging games, the blue team certainly didn’t give up and were always enthusiastic. Well played everyone!

We stated off alright with some good hits from Grace T, Natalie G, and Izzy H, scoring 3 rounders with 1 and a half of the them scored by Constance W. Hill House stepped up their fielding and they managed to get 5 of our team members out. When Hill house were batting they really slogged it and scored 8 and a half rounders. Our fielding was very good with 2 excellent catches by Sophie C and Amber H, some excellent throws by Violet B, Miriam A and Tara O and some great bowling by Sophie C. In the second half we played about the same scoring 3 and a half rounder’s with 1 whole rounder scored by Constance W.
Our batting innings was sound with both Immy N and Sophie J hitting some great power shots to score full rounders. However, most of our score in both our batting innings were gained through no-balls thrown by the MSM bowler.
On 21st May the Under 13a girls played Mt St Mary's in a fixture at home, which saw the sun finally shining for us! Having lost the toss (again), we were put in to bat first and our big hitters were all on form, with us really beginning to look for the spaces in the deep, part way through the innings and scoring nine good rounders. Our fielding was also on form, with us taking and holding some great catches in the deep; Emily H was on fire on 2nd post and many Mt St M girls were successfully stumped out at 1st post by backstop Amy C and Elfie CE's good team work. Georgia R, Jess P and Poppy S all worked hard in the deep to collect the ball and make some terrific, accurate throws to stop the Mt St M big hitters from scoring a full rounder. After the first innings we were 5½ rounders ahead, but were determined to keep our heads, as we were fully aware that rounders is a game of two innings and consistency is required throughout both of them.

If anything we played even better in the second innings, batting more consistently having had one innings to get used to the Mt St M bowler. Our confidence grew and we added a further 10½ to our total, with all of the team working hard to clock up the half rounders by reaching second. Mt St M found it difficult to adapt to our new bowler and on the first ball of the game their captain was caught out by backstop Imo C, after hitting it behind. It would be fair to say that the rest of the team did not recover from this body blow and were only able to add a further one rounder to their total, after lasting for 24 of the 36 possible counted balls before being stumped out in the batting box, before the batters were able to get around.

Solid team work ensured the under 13a girls dominated today, with both the batting and fielding being impressive in this game, well played everybody!

Second half; Connie W, Violet B and Grace T

We started fielding after winning the toss and we got off to an excellent start, dominating the play from start to finish of the first half. Four catches were made (Sophie C x 2, Tara O and Miriam A) and Witham only made 21 out of 27 balls before their box was stumped. When it came to batting we toted up the rounders and Holly D was the biggest slogger today. At this stage we led 8 to 3½

There isn't much to say about the second half, except we went to pieces! Witham did make any silly mistakes now and they totted up 5 rounder bringing the score to 8½ S.A. to 8 to Witham. We only needed 1 whole rounder to win and it would be fair to say we made really hard work of it. After a few halves (mainly from no balls) all were out bar Violet B, Connie W and Grace T. The girls worked hard to stick it out. Finally we accumulated 2½ rounders this innings, bringing the score to 10½ to 8½

Lessons to learn:

· A backward hit puts tremendous pressure on the player to get to first post and a good back stop will often have the player out.

· Post two is the most important for reducing the score of the opposition.

· The player must stand in the batting box or will be sent off after a warning has been given to the team.

1st innings, batting
We started the match on a bad note with both Natalie G and Constance W getting out, despite their wonderful batting. The Grace Dieu team had some great fielding, with their catching being very god and their throwing being even better. But despite all of this we came back fighting with Amber H scoring our first full rounder which was quickly flowed by another from Sophie C. Some other great half rounders were scored by the U11 team in the first inning all adding to our score.

1st innings fielding
In the fielding we had some great catching from Miriam A who has improved immensely and also Violet who is a great thrower and catcher, and thanks to them we already had two Grace Dues out. We all fielded tightly and kept all the half rounder’s down & with some great bowling from Sophie C and some effective fielding in the deep by Holly D and Natalie G and we managed to keep the score at 6½ to U11

2nd innings batting
In the second innings it was violet and Constance who scored the first full rounder. There were also some great half’s from Tara O, Amber H, Sophie C, Natalie G, and Issy H. Unfortunately in the second innings Holly D and Natalie G were stumped out .

2nd innings fielding
In the fielding we remained consistent, only just letting a few past second post. There was some great catching from Tara O and Amber H on second post. With all the effort we managed to win the game overall.
14 - 7 to us
Well done U11 a very good match

On Wednesday 8th May, the under 13 girls travelled to Hill House and faced an interesting coach journey with poor navigation by the driver meaning a late start for both teams and shorter matches as a consequence.

Having lost the toss we were put into bat first and were unable to complete the warm up we would have liked due to the pressures of time. The first innings saw many of our girls not firing on all cylinders, being quite sleepy after the two hour coach journey. Hill House who had meanwhile been using the time to warm up were on the ball from the offset, scoring ten rounders to our five. In the field we were slow to react in the deep and need to ensure we keep our focus at all times and think about what we are doing before sending the ball.

In the second innings we had begun to wake up and despite a shorter innings managed to add a further seven rounders to our total, with Imo, Jess, Poppy and Elfie all striking the ball well. Some of our other regular big hitters struggled to make contact in this game however, perhaps it was the bright pink ball! We capitalised on Hill Houses' fielding errors in this innings, taking every opportunity to increase our total. Our fielding in the second innings was also better, but there were a few panic moments and we need to keep our heads throughout the innings and communicate with each other.

All in all a better second innings than first, with the girls taking a while to get over the journey and into the game. It must be said that the girls had two of their regular squad out for this match, due to scholarship commitments (good luck CT and Emily!) but need to be firing on all cylinders from the offset on Saturday when they face Foremarke!

Thankfully, the weather was kind to us and the sun was shining .We won the toss and fielded first. By half time we managed 3 full rounders from Lily W, Felicity S and Fran Rh and 3 half rounders from Frankie R, Fran N and Charlotte H. Half a rounder was given to us through no balls by Grace Dieu.

In the second innings, Annie M scored a full rounder with Lily and Felicity also scoring half a rounder each. Frankie gained two more half rounders and another half was given away for no balls, which meant our total ended up at 8 ½.

It was rather a nail-biting end to the game and the team did very well to hold their nerves in order to secure the victory.

Players of the match were Lily W for her great batting and Francesca N, our captain, for her accurate bowling.

After a long journey, we started by fielding, having lost the toss and found our fielding stretched to the limit. The majority of the team wefe lefties and aimed their hits down the big drop at the edge of the pitch!

Their bowler delivered some fast balls and their fielders were very quick to react, so we found it difficult to add to our batting total. All in all a tough game against a good opposition, although some of their team were year 8 it has to be said!

Better luck next time girls!

Half time score 8 ½ - 3 ½

We won the toss. In the first half we started off well, with Sophie C as bowler, Tara O as backstop, myself Holly D and Izzy H as the deeps and Amber H, Violet B, Miriam A and Natalie G as posts. Our team played really well getting most of the Ranby girls out but whilst they were still in play we didn’t let them get many half or full rounder’s.

When it was our turn to bat we got 5 rounder’s these coming from Tara O 1 rounder, Sophie C 2, Holly D 2 and ½ from the rest of us.

In the second half we got most of the Ranby girls out again and whilst they were still in play not letting them het many half or full rounder’s.

When it was our turn to bat Holly D, Sophie C and Grace T each getting a full rounder each.

Well done to Sophie C and Izzy H for playing so well in the first match of the rounders season
