This was a great competition, with both sides amazingly matched. After a promising start down hill, with Anselm’s dominating the play, the calibre of the opposition keeper was tested. Sadly despite many first half opportunities, Jonah was unable to get the finish on several shots, too frequently the blanket defending resulted in a clearance for The Elms.

The second half continued in similar vein, but with the additional difficulty of having to work up hill. The Elm’s lifted their efforts and began to work the defence hard and test our keeper. Opportunities to score were provided in several penalty corners which unfortunately we could not convert to goals. Man of the match was the team Captain, Harvey.

U13A v Oakham School Lost 9-0

U12A v Oakham School Lost 3-0

U11B v The Elms Won 2-0

Our U11 ‘B’ team secured their third win in three matches this season, again demonstrating our strength in depth among our 3rd year boys. I really do wonder how many other schools in the country with just 16 boys in Y6 have such a talented ‘B’ team …
Once we had our bearings, we enjoyed a purple patch towards the end of the first half and Lewis Jones and the increasingly skillful Matthew Nakulski scored to give us that important ‘cushion’ of a 2-0 half term lead. The passing between team players was excellent again but we must call for the ball more often as communication wasn’t good at times. With rolling substitutions in the second half we lost our way a little, but with Nick Thorne playing such a full part in goal, he needed to do so, we kept a ‘clean sheet’. Isaac Stables played an important role in midfield for the ‘B’ team and the pace of our wingers, Matthew Nakulski and Bertie Watts, along with strength in defence from Cameron Dale and Theo Hunter kept The Elms at bay. Well done!
Our simple game plan couldn’t have worked better. All seven behind the ball when The Elms in possession, a quick breakout to the wings to play to our strength when we had the ball. It worked well down the left wing with Alex Woolhouse accelerating nicely to put pressure on their back line. On the right wing, Lewis Herdman often found himself in central midfield as Charlie Speed was so deep in defence, supporting Ollie Rudd and Harvey Williams that we needed Lewis Herdman to play more centrally to relay the ball to Edward Salisbury. It wasn’t attractive hockey at times and we are so short of practice (if it doesn’t rain or snow next Monday, we’ll have 3½ practice sessions this term, compared to about 25 rugby last term!) but full marks to the team for giving there all in the final away hockey match I’ll take at S.Anselm’s, something they knew before the match began.
The Elms dominated from the off and it was our tight defence and numbers back which kept them at bay. Ollie Rudd stopped the ball well and cleared effectively to the side many times whilst Harvey Williams was strong in the tackle and started some attacking moves as well. Charlie Speed was a fairly intimidating presence in the defensive midfielders role but, without Nick Price having to make too many actual saves, the ball was shooting from one side of our ‘D’ to the other worryingly often! The Elms had three short corners and twice the ball was struck inches wide of the far post. One attack from open play struck the post hard … we were riding our luck well …! Edward Salisbury did his best, as ever, but he found it hard to get forward – a bit like against Foremarke – as he was digging in so deep. As the match progressed, we had more attacking moves. We won the match as The Elms failed to defend in numbers as we did at our end. We had quite a few breaks and had a few opportunities ourselves before Alex Woolhouse netted from close range. The Elms were back on the attack, but with some lusty clearances, the ball running out of play and some increasingly skillful touches we held on. As I also said to the team before the match, we were always going to lose (on astro) to Foremarke and beat (on grass) Grosvenor … it’s matches like this one that play such a part in summing up the season as being a successful one or not, and it’s another ‘W’ this evening!
After dominating most of the 1st half, but just failing to score despite going close on several occasions, the team found themselves conceding a goal on the break and trailed 1-0 at half time. The boys responded magnificently and scored a deserved equaliser through Charlie L. Unfortunately soon after this a soft goal was conceded and with 10 minutes remaining the team found themselves trailing 2-1. The boys responded magnificently, William W in goal was making some fantastic saves, Izaak C was making some important clearances at the back, Oliver G was putting in some great tackles, Kevin H and John W worked tirelessly in midfield, captain Charlie L led by example being everywhere. Then the tactical change of moving Henry F up front paid dividends as he scored a quick fire hat trick to win the game for S. Anselm's, a fantastic 4-2 victory. I was really proud today, a great win, well done.

Denstone were a good side but S.Anselm's did not rise to the challenge and failed to compete in the 1st half and found themselves losing 6-0 at half time. The ball was given away far too easily, the boys were not keeping their positional discipline and were weak in the tackle. John W was far too often left exposed and had no chance of saving any of the goals. After harsh words by the coaches at half time the boys reponded and started to win 50/50 balls and played with some pride. Charlie H scored a consolation goal , but Denstone added two goals to their tally and recorded a comfortable 8-1 victory.

The boys have to play with pride and passion in the matches ahead if they are to get improved results, the opposition will not get any easier.

Until then the plucky Grosvenor team, fresh from their recent victory against Ranby House, had put up a good fight. With Charlie S, playing his best match for S.Anselm’s, completing a hatrick they then caved in and we scored eight goals in total. 19th October 2003 was the last time our U11’s scored 8 (or more) goals – a 13-0 win against Shobnall HC from Burton. The last time we scored eight against a prep school was in a puple patch in January 2003 when we beat King’s, Macclesfield 8-0 and then Beech Hall 8-0 in a week.
It’s so important to point out the advantage we have on grass. Everyone else plays on astro. Grosvenor found it difficult to adapt – rather like us, perhaps, having to play a fixture on the surface of the moon! They had, by some distance, the best player in the match and it was fitting that he scored their second goal, a wonderful solo effort.
S.Anselm’s started well. With Grosvenor playing down the middle too much, we used the wings to good effect but after that early burst they battled back and apart from Charlie S’s opener, the game was closely fought. Indeed, Grosvenor had three short corners in the game to our two.
Lewis H added a second following a short corner and it was so good to see us put our attacking moves together so well after half time. Indeed, immediately after the break a wonderful move down the left wing saw Alex W and Matthew N combine in a six pass move which was all but converted at the far post. It was a sign of things to come. With Charlie S often in possession in the middle of the pitch and forwards and wingers running into space so well, Grosvenor had little idea where the next threat was going to come from and we continued to score. Mention too of Edward S who battled away so effectively – it’s rare our leading goal scorer, by some distance, has to wait until the 8th goal to get on the score sheet, but he more than played his part in many of the other seven. Edward was a very good captain today too.
We looked a little more stretched when in defence. Usually we have a few very commited defenders – unfortunately, in some ways, our present three (and Ollie R, absent today) all like to get forward – it can leave us exposed at the back and despite Isaac S again clearing effectively, Harvey W’s one-on-one’s, Theo H’s promising debut for the ‘A’ team, and Nick P’s calm assurance in goal (it’s not easy to go 20 minutes without touching the ball, then have to make a crucial save in the cold!) we again leaked a couple of goals. It’s important we always have a defender with their centre forward, closely marked, plus an extra player in reserve. It wasn’t always the case today.
Our substitutes, Lewis J and Bertie W played throughout most of the second half and Lewis J held the ball up well on the left wing to set up some of the goal scoring opportunities whilst Bertie W started to cross the ball better as the second half progressed which was so good to see. On the fringe of the team last year, I’d certainly expect this from you – time to push for a regular place in the starting line up after half term.
The lasting memory of the match, however, will be Charlie S or Lewis H going forward in midfield with options left, right and centre – no wonder we scored eight. Being defensively minded, however, I’m still looking forward to that first ‘clean sheet’ … we’ve let in eight goals in three matches, about five too many … successful teams are built on a sound defence. We have a number of areas to work on after half term. Well played!

S. Anselm's started strongly with David C (Captain) spanking the ball straight through to the opposition D, leaving Monty to harry the keeper. This assault was deflected, but S.Anselm’s remained in the opposition half and moments later Dominic A had space and concluded the attack with a strong open side blast to open the scoring. With confidence bolstered S.Anselm’s began to dominate play with several more sorties into the opposition D without result. Finally towards the end of the 1st half a flurry of activity left the Derby goalkeeper unable to clear and Matthew B managed to get a finishing touch to the ball. This now put us into a good position for a change of ends at half time, heading down the hill with the sun behind us. Unfortunately Derby were able to put a goal past the superb efforts of keeper Hugo R just before the half time.
The 2nd half was slightly lack lustre for S.Anselm’s although Derby still did well to stay in contention. Seth A should be commened for diving about even more than usual. The real dominant force for S.Anselm’s was man of the match, in midfield, Paddy D. Well Done Gents!

Doing so meant a lot to me as we haven’t lost a home U11 boys hockey fixture on grass in my 18 years taking the team! (Two home matches to go …!). The early morning frost hadn’t really melted at all as the match began, and the overall skill level suffered as a result. That said S.Anselm’s opened brightly and there seemed little to worry about as Edward S, about to be tackled, found Lewis H in space on the right wing only to receive the ball back from a superb cross by Lewis and net a well taken goal from the textbook! Derby Grammar equalised when they took a corner and the taker dribbled the ball into the ‘D’ and a goal resulted … these new rules aren’t easy to follow: all I know is that in my league match against Loughborough University tomorrow this wouldn’t have been allowed! (as the ball hadn’t travelled 5 metres).
I thought a positive few words at half time would seal the victory and we started well again and Charlie S had the chance to equalize but tried to blast the ball at goal from 10 feet instead of placing it into the corner. From the ‘dangerous sticks’ free hit, Derby Grammar hit a long ball forward and took the lead. Nick P was again excellent in goal in this game but just left his goal a little early for the 1-on-1. We’d hitherto just about defended well enough. Harvey W had a very promising U11 debut. It reminded me of 2001 and Richard Lawrence’s first match for S.Anselm’s (praise indeed: Richard went on to captain S.Anselm’s in 2004 and Repton in 2009). Harvey was so good at the minimal backlift and beating players, through their legs. You just pushed up a little too much at times, over-committing yourself. Ollie R had a good day too, but Isaac S added extra solidity at the back with his excellent positional sense and important clearances. It set us up for the final 10 minutes. Edward S finally found the equalizer whereupon Isaac S himself picked up the loose ball at a short corner to give us the lead! Alex W, the best midfielder at tracking back to help out the defence, settled the issue as Derby Grammar failed to track back themselves and defend. Charlie S was very important at winning the 50-50 balls in midfield throughout the game and you covered a lot of ground today. Well done! It might have been a struggle at times, but we achieved the result in the end! We welcome Grosvenor next, just before half term.
It was a case of remembering what brought us the success at Foremarke on Wednesday as the first half saw us trying to blast the ball forward, with little success, but we passed the ball so much better after half time. Suddenly the skills of Matthew N and Lewis J were put to good use and three of our players scored in the second half. Nick T was again very much in the action and performed well in goal, but man of the match goes to Cameron D who cleared the ball so well from defence and took part in some good attacking moves. Having had such a good games session on Friday, and with the ‘A’ team short of defenders, you’re as likely as anyone for promotion. Well done! Theo H led by example and scored too whilst Bertie W’s experience was important. The Grosvenor ‘B’ team match in 10 days time will be on the Cope pitch … if you’re not in the ‘A’ team 9-a-side on the Tunbridge!

Nevertheless, they battled with great determination and at moments in the game they did seem to dominate Foremarke. However, it was too little and despite some frantic defence we conceded four goals in the first half. The second half was better and we seem to have improved our game rapidly only conceding one goal. A key problem was being able to clear the ball out of the D. Players of note were Harry C, Alex T and Edward H. The man of the match was Kevin H.
We have much to work on – not least being able to hit the ball with power, movement off the ball and tackling.
Formarke were a quality team with real experience on their chosen surface and this quickly showed in their increasing scoreline. Great defending by skipper David C and compatriot Seth A kept many attacks at bay. Hugo was great in goal making some commendable saves.
In the 2nd half a last attack almost resulted in a goal with Charlie A tinging the ball off the left post, but sadly we couldn't provide the finish. Man of the match was Seth for his commitment in tackles and for staying on the whole game despite being struck with a hard ball to the hand.

There was excellent stickwork and control from Matthew N and Lewis J, who had an inspired game, strength from Cameron D and Theo H at the back, impressive wing play by Andrew C and all led by the unflappable Lewis H. On a few occasions Nick T had to come to the rescue, and he didn’t let us down! He was alert and showed quick reactions when required – you were in goal because you were the first person I met on Monday morning when I arrived at school! An inspired choice!
Our passing was very good and despite us playing more ‘long balls’ whilst Foremarke opted for the ‘square pass’, a result of our different hockey background, a cross found the unmarked Andrew C at the far post to secure the only goal of the match. One area to work on is in the ‘D’ – we must shoot when we have the opportunity rather than hesitating or thinking someone else might be better to have a go! That said, we were all very happy with the result and will be pushing for an ‘A’ team place on Saturday … if the 2nd years don’t get there first!
Considering numbers (15 of our 16 3rd year boys were here, Foremarke had 15 from 36), pitch (their astro experience – it’s no coincidence that their U11A team have never won at S.Anselm’s on grass, we’ve never won there on astro!) and sport (we share this term with football, they don’t) it is to our credit that the scoreline from the other 75 minutes hockey played (both matches) was a very equal 1-1.
We certainly started all at sea – Foremarke scored in the first few minutes – as their pace, stickwork, accuracy of passing and movement off the ball saw an unmarked forward six feet from goal. For the rest of the first half Nick P in goal, Isaac S and Ollie R were unflappable as they cleared attack after attack, despite often being outnumbered on the Foremarke break, and with some luck we arrived at half time still only 0-1. Alex W was up and down that left wing, defending usefully, but not being allowed to work with Edward S as much as we would’ve liked whilst Charlie S looked a tower of strength when going forward at times, but there was a hole in midfield when Foremarke raced forward.
A clever goal early in the second half when the winger, about to cross the ball, spotted that Nick P hadn’t quite got his right hand post covered was the first in three minutes which secured the fixture for Foremarke whereupon we resumed our Paul Collingwood-esque defence. Isaac S had his stick too vertical – was it croquet? – but his clearances couldn’t have been better placed. We defended short corners well too, Nick P again clearing and it was good to hear you shouting at our players if out of position. Bertie W had his moments going forward, but needed to track their quick left winger, and Edward S ended up having to battle too hard himself – more an attacking midfielder fighting to release a forward than playing as a forward himself.
Apart from ‘those three minutes’ we fought well after just one games session. We look forward to Saturday!

U13 1st XI Hockey vs. Worksop College

The brave 1st XI took on the challenge of playing Worksop's U14s at home. Despite the obvious size difference the game play was exceedingly well matched. Worksop developed an early edge in the game and threatened the defenders around the D, but could not complete on goal. The Anselm's defence was incredible in the ferocity with Alfred H, Rob H and James B making some significant tackles. Sadly after ten minutes or barrage a single shot was able to penetrate past the guardians.

This was enough to really develop the game and enlivened the Anselm's team. The passing game was hampered by the more powerful Worksop players, but the stick control was definitely in favour of S. Anselm's. Toward the end of the first half the dominance of Anselm's in the midfield with Rufus L and Freddie R-S finally paid off, allowing James C the space to break through into the opposition D and begin an elusive single handed effort to beat the goalie, which was achieved with stunning success.

The second half began one all and was played in good spirits, but with neither side able to beat the deadlock until the last 2 minutes of the game. Awarded a short corner, Worksop were able to convert this to a 2 -1 lead. With only moments to play Anselm's lifted their game-play to a frenzied level. Sadly despite a last second short corner the equaliser escaped them.

Result: 2-1 loss.

All the boys should be praised for the highly commendable tenacity with which the game was played.

Under 9 Triangular Festival versus Foremarke Hall and Derby GS

On a fine sunny Saturday morning fifteen Form 1 and Transition boys made a trip to play in a triangular festival at Foremarke Hall. For many it was their first taste of competitive hockey and certainly for most the first time they had played on Astroturf. Two seven a side teams were fielded and both performed with much credit showing both skill and determination. The 'B' team lost both of their games narrowly 1-0 and 2-1 , but the 'A' team led by the experienced and inspirational Harvey W achieved some spectacular results beating Derby GS 4-0 and then holding a very strong Foremarke Hall team 1-1 fighting back from a 1-0 deficit. If it had been a competitive Tournament rather than a Festival the 'A'team would have triumphed on goal difference. These performances showed what can be achieved with perseverance and determination and with 6 Under 8's taking part the future of S.Anselm's hockey looks bright.
