The new S. Anselm's full sized, fully flood lit all weather Astro Turf pitch was officially opened this Saturday (28th October) at a ceremony that was attended by pupils and their families. The new facilities mean that S. Anselm’s pupils will be able to compete at new levels in sports and practice at school on a regular basis.
The full sized hockey and football pitch can be divided into three for 5- or 7-a-side games or used as a whole for full games.
The Astro has been dedicated to Mr Richard Tarbatt, one of our school governors, who, together with his wife and family, has worked tirelessly to bring the Astro Turf pitch to reality. Mr Tarbatt unveiled a monument dedicating the pitch to the Tarbatt family, at the entrance to the pitch.
Special guests England and Team GB Hockey Squad Forward, Liam Ansell and Rory McCallam, the England Goalkeeper then gave a fast-paced goal keeping demonstration, before inviting the children onto the pitch for the first time and putting them through their paces in goal scoring.
It was then time for the Senior Inter House Hockey Tournaments followed by an exhibition game of staff, parents and Old Anselmians.
The Astro has been a long time in planning and construction, so the build-up and anticipation has been enormous and it was fabulous to see the children finally run out onto the new pitch to play.
Thank you to everyone who attended the opening and watched the matches.
