Organised sports are an integral part of life at S. Anselm’s and the school is well recognised on the preparatory circuit locally, regionally and nationally as having impressive sports teams, coached to a consistently high level in every age group.
In the past three years S. Anselm’s teams have reached IAPS National Finals in swimming, netball, hockey, athletics and riding; and the under 13 netball team were nominated for a ‘Derbyshire Sports Award’ in 2013, after qualifying for the IAPS National Finals for three consecutive years. Pupils able in sport are challenged and given opportunities to perform at the highest level, with a number of pupils every year being selected for the Derbyshire County Hockey Development and Academy Squads. In the past year pupils have also been selected for the East Midlands and combined Midlands County Rugby Squads, along with the Derbyshire County Cricket Squad.
The school’s sporting talent has also been recognized by a variety of senior schools, with S. Anselm’s pupils being awarded sport scholarships at Malvern College, Repton, Oakham, Oundle, Rugby, Uppingham and St Edward’s, Oxford.
However, there is also a ‘sport for all’ policy at S. Anselm’s, with every child representing the school in teams for each of the major sports, regularly, throughout each term. The Physical Education programme stretches each pupil to their full potential; developing skills which help pupils with co-ordination, mental alertness, agility and bodily control. It also incorporates ethical behaviour: developing qualities of leadership, self-discipline, independent thought and responsibility. It gives pupils a desire to continue to enjoy sport and to participate in it to their fullest potential, in future life thus promoting a healthy attitude to personal fitness for life.
The excellent facilities and talented coaching staff ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy. The major sports for boys are rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket and tennis. The girls play hockey, netball, tennis, rounders and cricket. In addition to the main sports S. Anselm’s fields teams in athletics, cross country, equestrian events and swimming. Gymnastics, badminton, table tennis, basketball, circuits, water polo, riding, sailing, karate, dance, mountain biking, ultimate frisbee and shooting are regularly enjoyed by both boarders and day pupils throughout the school, through the extras programme.
The Millennium Sports Hall and 20m swimming pool both provide outstanding facilities for organised indoor sport and free-time use, whatever the weather, throughout the daytime and evening seven days a week. Outdoors there are five hard tennis courts, two large games fields, each with several pitches, and an astro-turf pitch due to be completed for use in Winter 2017/18.
Our team sheets and match reports are posted in the parents section of the school website which is password protected but you can jump straight to it by clicking here.
