The Colts A have had a tremendous season. With three boys making it into the West Midlands Lambs’ team, and many more that could have made it, the team has gone from strength to strength.
On Saturday the Colts A travelled down to Packwood Haugh for the final showdown. The Colts A team had won all 19 matches to date including a nail biting match against Abberley Hall earlier in the season. It just shows, travelling to play some of the best prep schools is both challenging and rewarding and the Under 11s have really made their presence known this season.
The game started well with a catch from the kick off. All game the boys ran in hard, supported well and secured possession from another superb game from the forwards.
The forwards have been sensational this season. Louis G has been a real force, living on the edge of the laws but frequently picking up the ball and running good lines off the fringes. Against the less well drilled teams this has been a scoring haven for Louis but Packwood tackled well. Toby G has really improved his game, rucking lower and running hard. It can take up to three boys to take down the Green Steamroller. Immense power. Talking of power, it brings me on to the captain. George P has been one of the outstanding players of the season, his tackling has taken off, he tells us it is all of the practice he has back home on the farm catching sheep. A strong ball carrier and formidable in the loose. Sammy U has learned a lot this season and as a Year 5 will be one of the senior players next season. Sammy has tackled well around the fringes and works hard to press in defence. William D, described as the rock, unmovable in the scrum, a real force in the tackle and on the occasion he makes it to the rucks there is no player with better technique, driving forwards from low to high.
Without the forwards the backs would not have had the clean ball they got but what a fantastic and driven back line the Colts had this year. At scrum half Archie P, who ended up scoring 6 out of the 7 tries against Packwood, was explosive off the mark, finding the gaps and supporting the players going forward. His shimmy and excellent dummy always broke the game line and from there S. Anselm’s were able to keep the momentum up. Outside Archie is Henry W, another player who has the ability to sell a dummy to his opponent. Prefers to run with the ball but is also capable of offloading the ball superbly out of the tackle. At inside centre, Edward M has been the defence guru. His technique in the tackle is faultless and the opposition certainly know when they have been tackled by Edward. Once tackled he rejoins the line and, in stark comparison to Jonny Wilkinson, is often the one tackling the next runner as well. He is a player who runs straight and hard, always making yards and another who would have most likely made the Lambs team. Harry T, an excellent finisher of the ball, spots the gaps and runs. Although quite slight in stature Harry supports the play superbly and makes good decisions when the space is out wide. George H and Alec F have really learned from this season also. They tackle well and run hard when presented with the ball. Quick enough to make good yards and next year with the added strength will be certain to appear on the score sheet. Colin W, the new full back has had a great season. A tough boy and excellent under the high ball. Since running with the ball in two hands he has started to play like a rugby player. Not shy of contact and passionate about the game.
A fine season boys and one you will treasure for years to come. You play as a team and work for each other. A delight to coach and competitive in everything you do! Good luck next year, you are ready to compete in senior rugby!!
