On Tuesday 1 July, a group of Junior musicians from S Anselm’s headed, rather excitedly, for Cadbury World in Birmingham. The journey passed quickly as the children dreamt of those purple Dairy Milk wrappers awaiting them at Bournville. After a tour of the factory, learning about the production of chocolate and the history of the company, we settled down in the scorching sun to our packed lunches.

After a rather lengthy stop in the shop (with a bill of over £100), we boarded the coach again to make our way to St Philip’s Cathedral for an afternoon recital.
Cheered on by many S Anselm’s parents in the beautiful surroundings of St Philip’s, with its Burne-Jones stained-glass windows, the Junior Choir and soloists put on a magnificent concert, including a performance (from memory) of Adam-in-Eden, one of Michael Hurd’s lesser-known pop cantatas. The choir also sang 3 well-known hymn and 3 Disney songs for good measure. There was a good variety of solo items also, ranging from a clarinet duet to performances on the rather out-of-tune piano!
Perhaps the highlight of the concert was the way in which the children – some of whom are only 7 years old – took on the challenge of a concert of such magnitude. The future of music at S Anselm’s is certainly bright.
