As always there was a great buzz around S. Anselm's this weekend, not least because it was Mothers' Day and because the 5th Year would be playing their parents at netball and football in a grand tournament.
The 5th Years' excitement was barely concealed as they spent the morning limbering up. The usual full English breakfast was downed ferociously and after a furious letter writing session (during which a few belated Mum's day cards were despatched) the boys and girls had a bit of well deserved relaxation and peace. Some watched a film and others had a refreshing splash in the pool. The U11 hockey squad departed for the Derbyshire Tournament where they performed well drawing an incredible four games, losing one and winning one.
After a glorious roast lunch, the afternoon finally arrived and the senior boys and girls braced themselves for the crunch matches which would decide whether the offspring were ready to claim their parents' sporting crowns. A rather tentative bunch of parents stood at the side of the pitches cautiously trying to to touch their toes whilst their energetic children gambled around the pitches eager for the fight! However, rightly perhaps, age and wisdom triumphed and both mums and dads retained their crowns and at least a little dignity! The mums won and the dads drew.

Lifting in the box!

The secret weapon takes the court!

Whilst the 5th Years had been engaged in gladiatorial combat with the olds, the junior pupils took part in altogether more sedate activity as they made their way to Paddley Gorge on the Longshaw Estate. It was a glorious afternoon and the boys and girls had a tremendous time playing poo-sticks, tag and 40:40 in the most splendid countryside. Soon after, the whole crew raced back to base for hot chocolate and cake.

The evening service was low key but intimate. As a celebration of Mother's Day, Mrs Emma Eade, a local christian youth worker, spoke to the pupils and parents about the love that a mother gives and the work they put in and how this compares to God's love. After this, daffodils were handed out to every motherly figure in the school as a show of thanks for all that they do. This was a fitting end to a a fabulous spring day in the heart of the Peak District and a great way to round off a wonderful term. However, I must accept that it might be time for a break.......!
