On the evening of Saturday 26 June, the Chapel Choir and the Wyns Tor Singers, an adult chamber choir from Winster graced the stage of the Hargreaves Hall for an evening of musical entertainment.

The Wyns Tor Singers began the programme with two contrasting madrigals, and were followed by two short pieces from a string quartet made up of Rosemary Dobbin, our violin teacher, and 3 other local string players.
The Chapel Choir then took to the stage to join forces with the Wyns Tor Singers for a performance of Howard Goodall's "The Lord is my Shepherd", with Hannah doing the solo with ever-increasing confidence. This has been preceded by two other arrangements of the same words by Schubert and Tomkins. To hear the performance of the Goodall "The Lord is my Shepherd", click here

To finish the first half, the string quartet were joined by the Wyns Tor Singers, two oboists from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and our very own recorder players, Georgina H and Annabel GP for a full performance of Henry Purcell's "Come ye Sons of Art". To be able to include two year 7 girls in this performance, surrounded by professional and semi-professional musicians was a joy to do. Their maturity of approach and the effort put in to meet the expectations required of a professional orchestral player will set them in excellent stead for the future - and made their Director of Music very proud! Well done, girls!

After a well-deserved interval, the concert restarted with three pieces from the S Anselm's Chapel Choir, all performed recently in Dublin. We started with the beautiful Rutter arrangement of "For the Beauty of the Earth", which was followed by "Brightest and Best", with Lucy R doing the solo. Finally, we sang the first movement from Vivaldi's Gloria.
This opening section of the second half concluded with a performance of Rhythm of Life, sung by both choirs.

The string orchestra then played four short, light pieces, including the theme tune to 'Fawlty Towers' because the highlight of the evening: Bob Chilcott's Little Jazz Mass, featuring both choirs, Andrew Marples (piano) and Greg Rawson (drums). It was a loud and lively end to the concert. To hear the Agnus Dei, click here.
Well done, and thank you to all the performer for a memorable night's music.
