Debating Team at Malvern

Debating Team at Malvern

Teaching pupils to think independently is a tough and slow business. Any teacher can scratch notes onto a chalk board and tell the pupils to go home and learn for a test next Tuesday. Actually getting young minds to explore possibilities and to have the confidence and ability to articulate their thoughts and views is tricky but vital. As Thomas Carruthers stated, "A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary."

It was with this in mind that we gathered a team of bright young minds and whizzed down the A6 to Malvern to challenge The Downs and the Elms to a verbal duel. The team comprised of Henry T, Charlie L, Nick T, Annie G-P, Georgie H and Isaac S who were great ambassadors for the school.

There were three motions and S.Anselm's won two of the three debates. We had a great deal to learn though and we were given some expert workshops on debating from the Malvern College staff and some members of their Sixth Form. We were also royally hosted at two of the Houses for lunch. All in all it was a fabulous day and our thanks go to Malvern College for organising such an instructive and useful day. Well done to all the pupils who took part!
