Geography is taught throughout the school following the Common Entrance syllabus, which has recently been updated. Scholars in the fifth year follow a course tailored to the requirements of individual senior schools. Each pupil receives three lessons a week, with preps in addition for fourth and fifth year children. In the early years (transition and first year) the subject is taught by the class teacher.
The syllabus requirements encompass human, physical and environmental geographical issues. A variety of resources are used to deliver the curriculum including written material, videos and DVD's of which the department has a very good stock . Geography is both an art and a science and the department benefits by working closely with other departments in the school.
Use of ICT is an essential ingredient of the course, as is field work. All fourth year pupils are expected to produce a field work project which goes towards their Common Entrance mark. The school will continue to make use of a very successful hydrology investigation in conjunction with Loose Hill Hall study centre in the Peak District. This has proved to be invaluable to those who opt for Geography at G.C.S.E. in their senior schools.
The department aims to stimulate an interest, develop an understanding and encourage a love of this subject as well as of learning in general.
