Grandparent's Sunday

Grandparent's Sunday

This was always going to be a remarkable weekend and it was with enormous excitement that the S. Anselm's boarding children welcomed their grandparents. Some sat shivering on the school steps in eager anticipation waiting for them to arrive but every one of them delivered huge warm hugs when they saw them arrive. The children beamed and proudly led their families around their fabulous school and into the Froggatt Hall for a mighty full English breakfast. The noise and hubbub was remarkable and the grandparents were treated royally!

However, more treats were yet to come. After coffee and biscuits, the whole entourage of parents, grandparents and children crammed into the Hargreaves Hall and received a spell-binding assembly from Mrs Lings who, as ever, delivered a thought provoking assembly using every prop under the sun including a rainbow! Despite the harsh cold weather she told us there is always colour of some sort to lift us and remind us of the wonders of nature. To top this she had made every grandparent some bright sugar coated lemon drops to have in the car home! Hot on the heals of the service came the Senior Reading Competition which was well attended and the audience was astounded by the quality of our readers.

Straight after this, the children were whisked off site and fattened up on roast lunches across the Midlands! It's true - nothing tastes as good as grandma's home cooking though some munched on fine local cuisine to give the grandparents a relaxing afternoon off! A number of children chose to stay on site and they received a magnificent roast lunch with the biggest Yorkshire puddings followed by a mouthwatering chocolate cake and ice -cream. Some chose to watch the, "Incredibles" others designed t-shirts and of course the sports hall was in full use.

Perhaps the most intrepid pupils were the 3rd Year Trial boarders who joined some full boarders on an outing to the Wirksworth climbing and bouldering walls. This was a fantastic trip and the boys did superbly well, dangling from fingers thirty feet up in the air! Nick T and Elliot W were the stars and our instructor thought we were all the bees knees! All this was soon followed by a splash around in the pool before heads hit pillows and loud snores were heard down the corridors! An unusual but very special Sunday was had by all.
