Parents are warmly welcome to attend the 2nd annual Interhouse Music Competition on the Monday back after half-term, which begins at 4 pm, and will finish at approximately 5.30 in time for day-pupils tick off. All pupils from years 3 up to 8 will be involved and will compete to win the trophy from the holders, Churchills.
FORMAT
The competition is run over 4 rounds as follows:
(1) Set song - this is where all 4 houses perform the same song. The choice of song this year is "Fifteen of the Best" by Alan Simmons. This is a song that will be learnt in class lessons and hymn practices within the next two weeks, and features the potential for up to 4 parts. Accompaniment can either come from Mr Marples or from a CD backing track, and additional instruments may be used. This round MUST feature all members of the house.
(2) Own choice song - The house must choose their own song to perform and may use any number of performers. Accompaniment can come from a backing track, from Mr Marples at the piano or from any instrumentalists within the house. The song can be any style but must be no longer than 4 minutes.
(3) Set instrumental piece - All 4 houses are required to do a performance of the theme tune from Eastenders. They may use any combination of instruments, or indeed a soloist. The houses may use Mr Marples as accompanist, but his contribution will not be taken into consideration. Various arrangements of the music will be available from the middle of next week.
(4) Own choice instrumental - Again, using any number or combination of instrumentalists, this round features an instrumental piece chosen by each house. Again, Mr Marples may be used as accompanist, but his performance will not be taken into consideration.
JUDGING
Each of the 3 judges will mark each performance out of 10, giving a total score for each house of 120. The positions will be announced in reverse order and the winning house will be asked to perform their Own Choice Song as an encore to the event. At the end of each performance, one of the three judges will give immediate feedback to the performers.
JUDGES
Once again, I shall take my seat on the judging panel. I am delighted to be joined by 2 very fine musicians:
Stephen Williams is Director of Music at Uppingham School. He also spends much time as a conductor and singer.
Jonathan Cohen was born in 1977 in Manchester, he is demand as a cellist, conductor of keyboardists at festivals around the UK and in Europe. Jonathan has performed as soloist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the London Chamber Orchestra and the King's Consort amongst other groups. More recently, he has become in great demand as a conductor, especially in France where he is particularly associated with Les Arts Florrisants.
Jonathan will spend some time earlier on Monday 31 October with our cellists as well as doing the same at Lady Manners School.
We welcome both judges to S Anselm's Prep School.
ARRANGEMENTS
Tick-off will take place in the Sports Hall immediately after the competition has concluded. There will also be refreshments for parents in the Foster Common Room. There is no need to book tickets, although early arrival on the day is recommended to get the best seats in the house.
