Mathematics is taught to children at S. Anselm's in sets from the age of 7.
Children work towards Common Entrance and Scholarship exams and our flexible setting arrangements ensures that everyone is correctly placed. Support is always there for children who are trying to grasp tricky concepts, as the aim is to only move the group on once everybody has grasped a concept. The mathematics results at the school in recent years have been particularly pleasing.
Children attempt regular practice papers to make sure they are used to the examinations that are coming their way, yet we never lose sight of the fact that there is more to life than exams! Our aim is that children leave the school understanding the implications of the topics covered - for use in later life.
A variety of teaching styles are used and we are fortunate to have interactive whiteboards. We try to make lessons as fun and engaging as possible. The use of mental warm ups, discussions and games are standard practice, stimulating the children and consolidating their learning without them even realising it. We also have all the latest textbooks geared towards Common Entrance, Scholarship and Key Stage 3 level.
Children at the school take part in the Primary Mathematics Challenge each year and the UK Junior Mathematics Challenge and team challenge. There are also several whole school events, such as Junior Forms Morning and House Times Tables Challenges.
