S. Anselm's School

Mathematics

Mathematics is taught to children at S.Anselm's in sets from the age of 7. In Y3 (transition) and Y4 (1st year) the maths teacher for each pupil will be a transition or 1st year teacher.

From Y5 (2nd year) upwards, the majority of the maths teaching is done by Julian Franklin and Mike Smith, who teach 9 of the 13 sets, whilst Dorothy Young (two), Rob Morse (one) and Clare Price (one) also teach some middle school maths.

The children have 8 x 35/40 minute lessons per week in the transition and 1st year. Classes from 2nd year upwards have 6 x 35/40 minute lessons each week.

Preps (one or two each week) are given to children from the summer term of the 3rd year upwards as part of the whole school prep timetable.

Children work towards Common Entrance and Scholarship exams and our flexible setting arrangements ensures that everyone is correctly placed. The mathematics results at the school in recent years have been particularly pleasing.

Children attempt regular practice papers to make sure they are used to the examinations that are coming there way, yet we never lose sight of the fact that there is more to life than exams!

A variety of teaching styles are used and we are fortunate to have interactive whiteboards in a number of the classrooms where maths is taught. We also have all the latest textbooks geared towards Common Entrance, Scholarship and Key Stage 3 level.

Children at the school take part in the Primary Mathematics Challenge each year and the UK Junior Mathematics Challenge.
