October 17th - Boarders and trial Boarders Weekend

October 17th - Boarders and trial Boarders Weekend

Friday morning saw the Trial Boarders arriving with bags and suitcases hanging off them but with grins of anticipation across their faces! They were welcomed by the old hands and raced upstairs to find their dorms and get acquainted with the place. Friday was a normal day with some great rugby practices followed by some time in the Common Room and Sports Hall. That night the boys had  riotous parlour games that involved "Fruit Salad", "Blind Man's Buff" and "Rat Run" all favourites that involve a great deal of energy. The girls had a super time back at their houses chatting and playing too. Exhausted they crashed into their beds on Friday night.

Next morning the kids enjoyed a Full English Breakfast and readied themselves for the matches in the afternoon. there were some cracking but tiring games against Birkdale and Denstone so Saturday Night Treat was just the ticket! The boys tucked into cookies and hot chocolate with the Year 8 boys having pizza and lemonade. It was a wonderful sight to see everyone chilling out with their pals after a long week.

Sunday was fabulous too and Mr Woodroffe delivered a great assembly on the need to seize all our opportunities. The singing was fabulous and it was nice to see Henry T and Charlie S deliver the prayers so well. After a quick coffee everyone raced to get changed in eager anticipation of the afternoon. The Howards very kindly took the Hillcrest girls down to Felicinis for a slap up lunch before they launched into some expert cup cake making with Mrs Rudd who kindly came in and wowed the kids with her culinary skills.

Meanwhile the others declared, "Let them eat cake" and civil war ensued! The younger boarders went to Laser Zone in Sheffield and zapped each other gleefully for several hours! The rest lept into the coach to embark on a major mission at Brailsford. Ably led by the ageing veteran Mr Scothern, the boys and girls waged war on a massive scale and were awesome in their enthusiasm. Bill, the instructor said that, "This is the best school we have had..... ever! Not just because they were very well behaved but because they threw themselves into the games and tried their very best". Ollie G was "man of the match" as he completed a storming run and won one of the games single handedly! Rambo eat your heart out!

After nearly three hours shooting at each other, the pupils retired to nurse their wounds and recount ever more spectacular anecdotes about their escapades that afternoon. Everyone was a legend in their own lifetime and the tales were increasingly tall!

Back at base the pupils had a slap up meal that re-fueled their aching bodies and then they wrote home and enlarged on their fabulous performances that afternoon. Before we knew it, they were crashed out in their beds dreaming of storming the barracades!

This was super weekend and all credit to the Trial Boarders as well as the old hands who were an absolute delight to look after. Thanks too to the myriad of support staff , Houseparents, tutors etc who ensured that the whole weekend went swimmingly.
