'On the Buzzer' - Prep School Quiz at Uppingham School

Congratulations to our two teams of four pupils from years 5 and 6 who travelled to Uppingham School on Tuesday for the Annual Uppingham Prep Schools General Knowledge Quiz.

Halfway through our long trip down to Rutland, we stopped off at Trowell Services for lunch.  Despite a week based around healthy eating last week, 5 of the 8 children still made the choice to have Burger King for lunch, although the comments that "we don't have it every day" and "everything is ok in moderation" did almost justify their decision...

A group of 3, however, led by James "Dr Healthy" L, went for the baked potato / sandwich option.  All 3 were members of Team B, so we'll see whether the healthy lunch had an effect on their success...

A short while later, we arrived at Uppingham and were welcomed by Mr Bartlett who explained the rules of the competition.

The teams to qualify for the quarter finals would be decided on a team's score, and not necessarily whether they won or lost, so it was important to chalk up lots of points!

TEAM A:  Amelia W, Fred BB, Yasmin D, Henry L

First match against Moreton Hall - lost 100-140.    Despite being in the lead for most of the match, the team lost to a strong Moreton Hall team, although their score was very respectable.

Second match against St John's College B - lost 80-100.  Pretty much always trailing in this match, most of the 80 points were gained through some correct "music bonuses".  The team manager was relieved we got those right!

Third and final match against Witham Hall B - lost 50-140.  A shocking start, going 100-0 down affter 3 questions.  A recovery was never really on the cards.

Despite three losses, the team had scored 230 points over their 3 matches, so there was a chance of qualification.  Unfortunately, when the 8 quarter-finalists were announced, the team had not qualified.  We later discovered that the team had been ranked no.9 so had just missed out.

S Anselm's A were therefore in the 'Plate Competition'.  This consisted of a pub quiz style round (of 20 questions), in which their score of 14 / 20 was one of the two highest.   They, therefore, qualified for the Plate Final against Maidwell Hall B:

Plate Final v Maidwell Hall B - won 230-80.  The final was restarted after it was realised (5 questions in!) that Maidwell had heard these questions before.  We were, at the time, 10-160 down!  It went in our favour, as we romped into a 140-30 lead in the restart, and never eased off, securing some silverware for the score.  Well done to the A team.
