Reception children had a wonderful day first focusing on pattern-making using beads, pegs on boards, blocks and anything else that they could find! To continue their focus on Chinese New Year children learned about numbers, matching our symbols to the Chinese ones. In the afternoon pupils investigated shapes in the Sports Hall court outlines, and then used their own bodies to make shapes with a partner.
What an exciting and stimulating day the pupils in Year 1 have had! They were first greeted with some difficult number problems to try and solve, and then went on an outdoor treasure hunt which involved reading clues with a partner and searching areas for hidden 2D shapes. Mrs Wortley reinforced this work in her ICT lesson and the pupils created some superb shape pictures. After lunch the mathematicians played a game of Addition and Subtraction Bingo with Mrs Humpleby and then used balances to weigh objects in the classroom. We even weighed out the ingredients (in grams!) for our ‘melting moments’ recipe. Whilst the biscuits were baking, we concluded our day by constructing a basket from the net of a cuboid and decorated it with mathematical puzzles!
Wow! Year 2 children will certainly sleep well tonight, after a math-magical day at school. The morning began with a scaled-up game of Battleships, with the children posing as the ‘boats’ on an enormous grid. Mrs Humpleby was given the honour of attempting to sink them all, and we enjoyed hearing the sound of explosions as each ship went down. The pupils then worked in pairs setting, and then answering, worded number problems. Some particular favourites were; “There were eight spaceships and each one had two aliens in them. How many aliens altogether?” and “Three mummies each had five children. How many children altogether?”. ….Busy mummies! In the afternoon the children explored the school grounds photographing 3-d shapes, and then were set the challenge of building the shapes they had found using just newspaper and masking tape. We even managed to find enough time to measure objects around the department, play multiplication bingo, order 100 carpet tiles along the corridor and share each other’s Mathematical games from home. What a fantastic day.
