The Reception class could hardly contain their excitement last Friday (and nor could Mrs. C) as the day had finally arrived to visit Buxton Fire Station and meet some fire fighters! After turning the silly woman off on the Sat Nav we finally found the Fire Station tucked down a little side street. We were greeted by Fire Officers Richard and Dan who gave us a wonderful tour of the Station. They allowed us to try on helmets, safety clothes and to show off our muscles by lifting the very heavy breathing apparatus. Next it was a quick lesson in stop, drop and roll - a procedure to use if your clothes catch fire. They then asked all the children to check if their parents had smoke alarms and if not to get them installed! After this the alarms went off and it was all aboard the fire engine, the children scrambled up the steps and set off at the rate of knots round the block, lights flashing, sirens screaming until they came to a stand still in the yard. They then had a turn at squirting water from the hoses and adjusting the spray. This was very exciting especially as I was in the firing range! We were taught hand signals to stop the water flow and used real fire fighter terminology ‘knock off – break up’.
It was then back into the station to be shown the inflatable boat used to rescue people from water. Dan quickly inflated the boat using oxygen from a cylinder and then threw a life line out to the children to be pulled to safety. The children had a go at rescuing a friend in need which was great fun. We were finally shown how to get ready for the end of day parade and inspection and were dismissed by the Chief Fire Officer.
All in all a Grand Day Out!
