Repton Challenge

Repton Challenge

Last Sunday a team of 6 enthusiastic artists took part in the annual Repton Challenge. The task this year was to design a range of costumes inspired the Aboriginal story ‘The Origin of Water’. The story tells of how the possum, bandicoot, wagtail, kingfisher and rat managed to discover from the blue tongued lizard where the water was hidden.

The girls attended demonstrations, and then threw themselves into headdress making, printing and dyeing to create costumes which could represent the animals. As the paint was drying they choreographed a dramatization of the story which they then performed, backed by traditional music, along a professional catwalk in front of an audience.

Despite their initial reticence the girls performed splendidly, strutting down the catwalk like professional models. They are shown here at the dress rehearsal.
